Counterfeit One Ounce Bars - New York Area

Jinx86Jinx86 Posts: 3,674 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was just forwarded this email and thought I would pass it on.

"The picture below shows a grouping of counterfeit one ounce silver bars that were recently bought in the New York/New Jersey area. Acid test shows copper base with silver overlay. Over 200 counterfeit bars have been passed."

I suspect those bars are compliments of Aliexpress. They've been producing them for years.image

I had actually bought a small lot of mixed fake bars. Just to have them on hand and for comparison. Weights are right but the size was all wrong due to the copper core.

Appears dimensions have to be changed to meet the correct weight.

A website showing correct dimensions/weights for various bars would be a good thing to have.

Try Google. There are several web sites with information on what the differences are between the real and fake bars and the various methods to authenticate them including some good You Tube videos. The fake one ounce bars are the same size as the real ones but are noticeably thicker since brass/copper is lighter than silver and they need to bring the weight up to a full ounce because they know people will weigh them. Since all brands are about the same size it would be a simple matter hold a bar that's known to be real against a bar being checked and checking the edge to see if they are about the same thickness. As far as tests go, the ring test, ice cube test, and the magnet tests are all easy to perform.

Nothing new. Fake one ounce bars have been for sale for several years now.

Reports coming out of Des Moines, Iowa that PERTH MINT packed 20g gold bars (4) which are copper core in sealed package , are indeed, fake. Might want to test before thinking of "capitalizing" on deals, people.
