Never seen such amazing rainbow toning on a PCGS graded coin.

What are your thoughts?

What could have created this beautiful coloring?

Sometimes when they are stored in the original mint set packaging they can tone beautifully.
Other times they will get a haze with some toning.
Mine came from a forum member......he may still have his images and can post them.

This set of Coinsarefun was from Astoria, Oregon. That's the mouth of the Columbia River on the tip top coast of Oregon. I got it from the owner that moved to Nevada and then sold in a batch of sets. This was the ONLY one that had any coins turned in the packaging. So, I think that the packaging itself must have something to do with it. Steff had it graded after she bought the set from me. My pics are not the quality of Phil's but do show it differently.

Still in the Mint packaging in this shot:

I liked the coin when I saw it for the first time the other night. Don't like it 1300 worth though. Submitter should have requested this coin reverse holdered so the color side matched the label side. I'm beginning to like high grade proof toners as the colors have significantly more POP. Alas, Winged Liberty has beaten all of us to the punch. Should check out his showcases under "Toned Coins".

I never cared for the 1983-S Discuss Thrower obverse, still don't but the tone on that one is swaying me just a bit!

The OP Dollar reverse is incredible!

I like the toning on that one in the OP. Very nice target tone. Symmetrical, pastel, no mottling.

Everyone knows I am not a fan of tarnish... however, the coin in the OP is almost like

an artists rendition.....very unusual... Cheers, RickO

    Certainly 2 very gorgeous coins!

I bought a similar (though not quite as colorful) 1984 $1 around 15 yrs ago at a large show for $35.

When I brought it back to my table, my friend I was sharing the table with shook his head at me and pointed out that the bid was only like $11 (I am probably wrong on the number, it was a decent while back) but it was a low number, and I had paid well above that number.

He continued to ridicule me until the right guy showed up at the table.

He wasn't laughing when I sold it!

And again, it wasn't as pretty as the coin above, but mostly bright golden yellow, orange and some greens and reds.

At the time I didn't even think about slabbing it, don't know why, must have been the "excitement-of-the-moment-flip-the-newp" coin show mentality that set in on me.

Great dollars though! Love them both.

This toner is only $200 and is similar to the OP's coin.

I've put together a full set of Commemorative $$ in Dansco Albums hoping for beautiful toning to occur in 20 years. Great coin!
    I love them Barber Halves.....
