Strange Coloration or Substance on Indian QE

I just received the coin from an online auction last night. It's in a PCGS MS OGH holder, and has noticeable dark/brownish toning or perhaps some substance that has started showing since its plastic entombment. The toned area was not evident in the auction pics. Anyone seen this on gold & have any idea what it could be? Perhaps a large mixture of copper alloy that worked its way up on the planchet, or some brown putty-mix that's finally showing through? Never had to go the buy-back route, but wonder if would PCGS buy back such a coin if it is indeed some sort of added substance?

It looks like dip residue to me, which may or may not come off harmlessly. PCGS would know whether they can conserve it or not.

Definitely looks like old residue of some type... either dip or spillage... PCGS should be given

a shot at conservation....Cheers, RickO

Yup.... definitely not right, B. Luckily the auction house has a return privilege. This one will be going back on Tuesday.

Gone are the days when PCGS's guarantee would protect against surface deterioration. They no longer cover things like spotting, hazing, PVC contamination, changes in color, or corrosion.

Returning it is smart.
