Has anyone figured out how to get into Stacks-Bowers auction archives?

Just curious if there's a way to sneak in?

    Haven't found a good one yet...on the left-hand side of the Archive page you can click on an individual auction and it'll take you to a listing that is in lot# order, but that doesn't do you much good if you don't know the lot # and it's a big auction. I've been curious how much a coin sold for in the November Baltimore auction, but haven't been able to find it because I don't know what the lot # is out of the 6037 listed!

    Yes, this is an issue!



    If you're motivated, you can download the full PDF of the catalog, and then either scan through it visually or do text searches, and that would get you to the lot in question. Then you could enter the lot number to find the lot online (or check the separately downloadable list of Prices Realized).

    Yesterday Googled an old auction reference and the prior Stacks style page came up - was really surprised (pre-ANR merger).



    Not sure it would work for you but worth trying.

    Google is a way to go. I use their Advanced Search and set the site to stacksbowers.com. (Or whatever I want it to be if I'm searching in a specific site.) Not everything has been indexed, and so you won't be able to find every lot, and you may have to try a few different ways to search what you're looking for. The other bad news is that the URLs of the coin details pages are not in lot order, so if you find a neaby lot it's not a trivial task to find the lot you are looking for.

    I seem to recall Brian K coming here and saying that Stacks was planning to digitize the archives. Am I misremembering that?

    Yes it was 2 months ago that he came on here to mention they are currently working on getting it fixed.

    If you are on "Coin Facts" you can click on the auction line. That will take you to a page with no picutres, but there is a box at the bottom that lets you click to the actual auction. If the auction has been within the last couple of years, you will get to the actual listing. If it is older than that, you might get a picture with no description.


    Stacks' sold the 1808 quarter eagle that is my collection some years ago. When I looked into that one, I got just a picture with no wording.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    1) Hire a hacker.


    2) Sell his work to SBG.


    3) Fire the entire SBG IT department.




    Before I entered the coin business in 1979, I had 20+ telecommunications specialists and data-base designers working for me at a consulting company. The technology has changed; the concepts have not. I've asked a couple of coin collectors in the IT domain about SBG's problem. One response "Too small for my company to deal with"



    Brian K once related to me that they had 1,800,000 Teletrade transactions to deal with. Maybe a little critical path analysis by upper management would be in order. image

    Perhaps this does represent prioritization by upper management. When the platform to sell coins today doesn't work as expected 99.99% of the time, why bother with archiving past success.



    FWIW 1,700,000 of those transactions would probably read, "unsold, relisted for next week".
