NEWP: 1832 Capped Bust Half (O-105?)

oih82w8oih82w8 Posts: 13,235 ✭✭✭✭✭
I put this Capped Bust Half in Lay-A-Way and was looking for some Overton Variety assistance since my work server blocked.

I am thinking O-105 with emphasis placed on the unitedD STATES OF America lettering placement along E PLURBUS UNUM.

Thank you for your interest and comments!

O.105 is right. Pretty typical die state for that marriage. Flat stars drawn to the edge, worn rims. Looks 50-53 to me. If the luster's all there I could see higher.

I am thinking it is in the AU-53 to AU-55 range, but it is hard to tell how much luster is left. Sure looks better than an EF-45.

    When in doubt, don't.

Obverse looks 45 to me, but the reverse looks 53...guess I'd land in the middle at 50. Wondering based on the look of the stars if some of the weakness on the obverse is typical for the die variety and not really true wear (not a capped bust half expert - though I do enjoy looking at them)...if that's the case, I'd guess it would grade at least 50 if not 53.

It's an AU coin. The detail is easily 53 however since luster looks to be absent, some might call it AU50. I would expect a 53 from PCGS if it were my coin, but not be shocked if they called it 50.

    Rims are showing XF wear

    Coin is showing AU wear

Luster is hiding so well you can't find it....

I think 53 would be a gift, but 50 looks to be a good fit.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Looks like enough luster for a 53, to me. Nice attractive coin.

With all do respect it is impossible to grade Bust halves by their rims; the lack of milling is due to die wear rather than circulation wear.

PCGS gave her an AU55 grade.

    Hey Brian.

I was not referring to the milling at all.

Always look at a coins rim for signs of both damage and wear. Physical wear.

Not the third side, the high side of the physical rims.

One of my mentors and a guy who would look at a coin for 10 seconds and 9 times out

of 10 nail the grade taught me to ALWAYS look at the rims first when grading a coin.

Rims, obverse, reverse, obverse. Every time.
