Usually buying raw on eBay is a losing proposition. This coin turned out to be quite nice.
the 1840 $5 comes in two varieties, the narrow mill (more common) and the broad mill (less common). This is the narrow mill variety. Coinfacts estimates 275 extant. I'd call it a very nice AU53-55.

Buying raw gold on eBay is too risky for me but it looks like it paid off for you here.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

It's always a huge plus to see a raw piece at a show and examine it, and then you can make your decision.
To make a nice score sometimes you have to knock the little man on your shoulder off who is asking you "Why is this piece still raw?" and not ask why because who really knows why.........sometimes......
And sometimes you must listen very closely to the little pragmatic man on your shoulder...
It all depends on your knowledge and confidence in your decisions.
One thing that has been repeated here I am sure many time is this: When buying ANY coin, remember it was once raw. When I buy coins I try to imagine the coin residing in its original dusty staple-rusted 2x2 or grimy flip and ask myself if the coin is worth it and stands on its own if the plastic wasn't there.
If it does and I know I can make some $$$, I buy. If not, I pass.
A high grade on a slab is meaningless to me if the value isn't there.
If you want to have a nice day, don't buy raw gold on eBay
