    "1891 cc $10 think it's original?"

Based on the images, it has the look of original late 19th century gold that has been dipped at least once. The market now tends to accept the surfaces of such coins as "original."

What astrorat put is similar or parallel to my thoughts.

It appears to be an original AU58 from the pics. If there are numerous hairlines that aren't showing up in the pics, all bets are off.

Nice coin and appears original to me.... I do not see any indication of an early dip, but

even if it were, it makes no difference ..... Cheers, Ricko

I like the coin as a 61 based solely on the images. And whether it is original, I would rather see it in hand.

As important as your question is in terms of whether the coin is original, currently the answer seems less critical and has been replaced with the questions will it grade and if so...What did it grade.

I can't say with certainty about originality, but it looks like a nice coin regardless of grade...but it will then boil down to if the price is right with you.

    Very original. AU58.
    When in doubt, don't.

Thanks everyone. I have only seen that type of toning on original coins. It is graded MS62. I think I tried to get a 63 a few times because the price difference is a big jump to that grade but it did get a 62 every time from PCGS and NGC.

The second set of pictures gives a very different image of the surfaces. From those images, it does not look like it as been dipped. I am surprised it is not a 63 as it has fewer marks for a CC than I would have expected for a 62. Perhaps there is a slight rub (cabinet friction) that is keeping it from 63. Nice coin.

It seems some are suggesting that TPGs look at cc coins differently from coins minted at the higher production facilities, but your coin grading at MS62 seems consistent with what I am seeing on the graded $10 Libs in my collection. I have some 61s and a 63 $10 Libs, and yours appears to fall right in the middle condition-wise

Yes, TPGs provide a bit of forgiveness to large CC coins, especially dollars and Double Eagles, with respect to surface marks.

Coins are not graded in a numismatic vacuum and considerations of when and where they were struck and how they were handled post-striking are part of the evaluation process.

Forgiveness in grade for specific mints is a mistake in my opinion.

I'd rather have a yardstick to convey CONDITION rarity with a full and complete STANDARD!

When and where they were struck and how they were handled post-striking should apply to all circulating coins.
