Sorry to hear the news, one heck of collection he put together. Good person.

Just heard the news. Dan was THE man, and was surely THE gentlemen. It was a tremendous honor to have known him for almost 15 years.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

I remember getting the Holmes catalog for early large cents in the mail and being absolutely glued to it for several hours. Amazing.

Sorry to hear this very sad news. I met Dan on only two occasions, and was impressed with his depth of numismatic knowledge, but mostly with his gentlemanly and kind demeanor. He will be sadly missed.

I am very sorry to hear of this. He fought a long and courageous battle against Lou Gehrig's disease. He was a wonderful man. Here is my one ex Dan Holms coin, a 1794 S-21 large cent.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Dan Holmes was truly a giant among early copper collectors, and his passing is a tremendous loss to the hobby. But something that many collectors and forumites may not know about Dan is that he was not only a neighbor of early Federal silver collector and author Russell J. Logan (co-author of Early U.S. Dimes 1796 - 1837, and Federal Half Dimes 1792 - 1837), but that they were also good friends, as well. Imagine the combined collections, of Dan Holmes Large Cent Registry Collection and the Russ Logan Federal Silver Collection. Imagine the combined knowledge possessed by these two great numismatists. And imagine the fascinating discussions that the two must certainly have had whenever they chatted, probing the details of early American numismatics. It was a distinct pleasure to have known these two great gentlemen, and to have learned from both of them. Their contributions to numismatics in general, and to me personally, will not be forgotten.
