  We watched the movie "Pearl Harbor" with the kiddies this evening. It's not terribly historically accurate, but still it's a decent introduction to the time & sentiment prevailing at the start of the US involvement in the war.
  
  
  
  It might have started for us in Pearl Harbor, but it ended right here, on board the Mighty Mo, the last US battleship, where the unconditional surrender was accepted in Tokyo Harbor.   WWII is often remembered for all of the bad things that happened. But the war also necessitated a lot of social change, ie women being accepted into the workplace, blacks serving in the military etc. It was a point in history where America really could have folded, but we rolled up our sleaves, got together as a nation and defeated our enemies.

  I made it a priority to visit the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial when I was coming back from Korea in 1996. It is a very sobering experience and a fitting monument to the 1,177 Sailors and Marines (I don't think that there any women on board) who served aboard her.   This day for me is very dear to me. For the main reason is what happened at Pearl Harbor and more personnel, Dec. 7, 1984, was the day that I first told my wife that " I Love You!". Every year I remind my wife of that special occasion.

  "Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!

  I have a picture very similar to the one posted by BryceM... It's from my vacation 2-1/2 years ago.
  
  Before going into the USS Arizona Memorial, we had to sit through a short movie about the events that lead up to the outbreak of war in the Pacific. I thought the movie portrayed the context in a balanced way. Despite my knowing quite a lot of the history of that period, and not having learned anything new from the movie, I found myself getting very emotional seeing footage of the attack and the deaths of so many American servicemen.
  
  I go back to Oahu every few years, and each time I make a visit to Pearl Harbor.

  Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
