I got my regrade results for my 1796 $1

For those of you playing along at home, I wanted to reholder a coin that had sticker residue (most likely from Heritage) that I posted in a thread a while ago.
Since it cost a lot to ship it back, I decided to do a regrade instead of a reholder along with a TrueView. The total was $80.95 vs sixty-something.
It went in as a 35 and came out the same
Oh well, I've got a nice new holder and a TrueView and the grade remained the same.

My one shot at a new holder and new grade was a bust out 64 that came back 63+....ugh.
There was no much risk on yours.....sold for the grade.

PlastX would have saved you $90.
Soap and water would have also saved the $90

I think you were very lucky that it did not come back as "genuine" due to the edge problems. I'm surprised you took the chance of sending it in.
It was a regrade, so there were only three possible outcomes:
1) It grades the same
2) It grades higher
3) PCGS buys it back (a lower or genuine grade)
That rim damage (worse case) or rim dents (best case) could have kept this out of a slab, period.
That deep mark in front of the nose is somewhat troublesome too.
Plus the light cleaning.
Overall, better examples in the market place for those who are a little more patient.

I know. Where were you when I was buying this?
You could haved saved me from a $8,000 loss.
Do NOT use Goo Gone; it MELTS plastic.
I use goo gone all of the time with no issues at all. It does not melt plastic.

If it were to have been bought back, how would price have been determined?

I have never had an issue with Goo Gone, but if you have some REAL issues with scratches, the headlight polisher works great. I saved big time on a slab for an 1856-S gold dollar that I thought would need to re-holdered.
As for this 1796 dollar, the only spot that would bother me, given that it is a VF-35, is the rim mark on the reverse at 4K. The other stuff is what you might find on a circulated old coin.

Used it for years, never had any problem whatsoever.

I do not know. I assume it would have something to do with what you paid for it.
I'll ask someone who knows.

Goo Gone is good
Goof Off eats plastic
As those who remember my earlier thread recall that I proved this by using Goof Off

Goo-Gone is for plastic, and a slab doctor's delight. Goof-Off eats plastic. Just don't

Not a total loss. Don't be a sad sack about this. There is still value as it is genuine.
A good lesson learned and move on.
You are now better educated and will purchase more wisely in the future.

A $8k loss on a $6k coin? Surely you didn't spend $14k?! Am I missing something?
As for its quality, you could find a nicer one, but really nice VF small eagle dollars are NOT easy to find. I looked for my example for three or four years, and even then it has some minor rim issues. I like your coin. It isn't perfect, but it has character, shows signs of circulation, and at least three TPG graders who examined it in-hand thought it should grade on two different occasions.
Thanks for sharing the hard-won information regarding "Goof Off".
I do hope you didn't pay $8k for it though. That seems a little steep, given past sales and the current market.

This. it's a coin that many collectors will never own in ANY condition.
I have my share of tougher large cents in genny holders....I always figure if someone wants to disparage say my 1804 large cent, I'd like to see theirs, assuming they even own one.

5K coin. Loss of $3,000. plus the 80 odd dollars wasted on getting sticky residue off the slab.
So it appears you were disappointed it came back the same grade. Either higher or lower would have helped you out.
And no, I didn't pay $14, $8 or $6k. I was just messing with Timmy.

When I look at the coin all I can think is how amazing it is that it survived 219 years in that condition. Who saved it? Where has it been? Did George Washington give it to John Adams as he left office? Did it find its way down to Tennessee in celebration of becoming the 16th state? Did the light scratches and rim dings get there when the last British troops left the U.S. or maybe at the first ever Independence Day celebration? Considering the first U.S. coin was minted in 1792, I find this coin amazingly attractive and historically amazing. If only it could talk..................
Bingo!

"I was just messing with Timmy" reality read: I was out and out lying.
Not liking an opinion, or being sad at the outcome isn't the barometer as to right or wrong on the matter.
And, I will certainly have to learn to live with your disappointment and lack of respect you have for me and others here who don't see eye to eye with your collecting habits or abilities.

Here you state, "could have saved me from an $8,000. loss."
At minimum, taking you AT YOUR WORD, this coin cost you 8K.
Later in this thread you state you were just messing around and didn't really pay that amount.
So, were you lying when you stated what you paid or are you lying now stating in essence that is not what you paid.
Doesn't make a tremendous difference for this thread, but nice to know when we're being trolled and good to know your written word is next to worthless as it can't be trusted to be truthful.

I know. When you showed up saying I got gypped, I could tell you were just a troll and didn't know what you were talking about. How much did I get gypped? Or don't you have any clue what I paid and just troll threads for attention? What I paid is none of your business, even though you know I got gypped.
I just treated you with the respect you earned.
I would ask you if you actually collect coins or do you just troll here, but I've given you all the attention you deserve.
Now go troll other threads
