How would you describe a MONSTER toned coin?

Sometimes a coin is so vibrant and colorful it deserves the MONSTER qualifier, but it seems to be an overused attribute to describe toned coins.
What would you say pushes a coin into a true MONSTER toned coin?

1) rich bright attractive natural color that surprises me when I look at it
2) color that covers most or all of one side of the coin and
3) It must stand way out from among it's peers in the series, and also possibly date/mm (For example the same color on an every day ho-hum red/green toned 1958D franklin from a mint set could constitute monster color on a Peace Dollar. The 58D could be a monster among 1954D franklins for example. )
Apologies in advance for this "cheap plug" for my son and his new enterprise. He grew up with the name "Toneboy" and was always in love with monster toned coins since the age of about (6).
Wondercoin.

True Monsters sell themselves without descriptors to the the peering eyes of those who are looking. Be that , as it may… eye appeal pushes them, not words.

Overtoned coins without the lustrous fields are not monster toned coins.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

Luster easily visible even through the toning
At least one side of the coin completely covered in color.
Color easily visible without having to have tons of light beamed at the surfaces

You could go look at Ms. November in the 2015 PCGS Calendar.
He might have a few to browse in here...just a few though.
Oh, July of the 2015 PCGS Calendar is fantastic as well.

In my opinion a monster toned coin should have (in no particular order)

I like this definition which mirrors what I look for.
Here are some photos from Brandon.

That is a good read and I have read it before. I like that he includes some original material from Sunnywood.

One that I would not purchase....... Cheers, RickO
Rarely does the owner of such a coin describes it himself as such. The "others" do that for him/her

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

That is NOT a monster toned coin IMO

monster kinda sounds childish to me
what makes a moose...a moose...or how would i describe a moose
there's no need to
i agree that the peso is no moose
now that one centavo...ok this coin is the only one speaking to me in this thread here
it's all a personal thing anyways
we call um how we see um
best i could offer is...it's a coin that leaves no doubt that you're looking at the creme of the crop in "patina rarity"
With all due respect to others that know more than I do, I would only call two coins in this thread as monster toned.
And THAT is why there is always controversy when someone uses monster in a description. Everyone has an opinion of what monster should mean. Kind of like the term luster.
Agreed ... you know it when you see it! And, trust me, the 1903 Peso is a monster by any standard whenviewed in person.

My definition would be:
Great knockout color that impresses the non-collectors too.
Blazing or attractive luster that shows thru the color.
No special way to tilt the coin, it looks good no matter what angle. Not a fan of coins where something 'pops' only at a very specific, microscopic angle.

I bought this one from a respected dealer in toned Morgans, and he didn't consider it a monster. But it certainly meets Erik's criteria. (And it is the one coin in my whole collection that my husband finds impressive!)
Coins with caked on toning where it blocks the luster, I wouldn't call MT coins.

My 1859 IHC is PR65+ which not a top pop grade, but there is nothing above it in grade that has any toning. So I would consider it a monster Toned coin as well:
For me, I think a Monster Toned coin will have spectacular toning and also be of a very high grade.

Never really understood those terms used for incredible strike and eye appeal... As would you call a very attractive woman a Monster or Moose?
better to call a female a moose then to call her a proper name of a female moose
i learned this upon being inducted into a moose lodge
oink....
now there's some right there....thanks for sharing those

we need a better image of that 57 lincoln and a reverse too
i'm really digging that
of course now aurora borealis
that 56' frankie's obverse is off the charts
True monsters toned coins do not need to be described as such. They just are.

Your 1846-L IHC is the BEST 1864 PR1864 hands down because of the toning. This coin is a true MONSTER. I know what you paid for it. You really SUCK.

There are so many beautiful coins in this thread. However, IMO opinion there is only one Monster posted so far

PM with that one. I can sort of see 2-3 coins qualifying. And I don't think there would be agreement even on those 2-3. The standards for monster should be in line with PCGS standards for highest level of eye appeal ("exceptional").
What is it with this new program where your edit bar disappears into the side margin right after you post? I find this happending regularly on my posts. So rather than correct my post above, I have to make a new one. Sheesh.
