Question: 1950 Franklin Proof Matte or Mirrored Finish?

I have an opportunity to buy either a matte finish or a mirrored finish 1950 proof Franklin...for about the same price. Same condition.

Is one type generally preferred over the other?

Aside from the Lincoln cents, I'm not familiar with PCGS designating the finishes for the 1950 proof coinage as matte (satin) or brilliant. However, many of the 1950 proof quarters and halves, in my experience, have varying degrees of mirror finish. I prefer what might be considered a satin finish on these coins, but I also think I am in the distinct minority. Therefore, for liquidity and value you might be best off getting a nice, brilliant piece.

there is really no such thing as a Matte finish 1950 Proof, the appearance is simply the result of the Mint improperly preparing and overusing the dies. the flow lines and the resulting worn fields is what you are seeing. given the choice I would choose the mirrored coin.

Ditto

The dull finish 1950 Proof quarters and half dollars were not popular then, and they are not popular now. I once owned a 1950 Proof set that had such coins in it back in the 1970s. They looked a little like business strikes, but they were distinctly Proofs.

I would prefer the bright, mirrored finish... (surprise, surprise).... I think they look best
