GTG: 1918s Walker

Full Disclosure: I'm bidding on it simply because I think it's undergraded....so be brutal, and "worst case" on me.

Rather like the originality, (real or faked).

(Not sure why the reverse pic is smaller....but you get the idea....)

Guess the good news is I was correct that it may be undergraded. The bad news is it probably wouldn't make 40, like I thought it might.....and since I've been outbid, I don't really care.

It seems like you posted the grade pretty quickly, but I will give you my opinion anyway. I've seen similar coins in VF25 holders, though I would have guessed VF30 without having seen the slab image. However, I wonder if that is verdigris near the date and also wonder about the 8,000 black specks on the reverse that look as though the eagle were pelted with buckshot.

I figured 2 hours was enough....or I would have to remember to come back! I'm a rather sporadic reader/contributor. I'm sure most are used to doing their grading before reading the entire thread, anyway.

- Didn't see the color difference near the date as verdigris....but you could be right.
- Quite possible the reverse has some issues, and they netted it down.

Guess, in general, I'm used to seeing lower grade Walkers being graded HIGHER than I would grade them. So seeing one I thought was undergraded was a momentary thrill.

The VF 25 grade is the correct grade. The coin has far too much wear to be considered a 40. Because early Walking Liberty halves in the high-mid circulated grades with good eye-appeal are not often seen they tend to be overgraded by overenthusiastic collectors.

After glancing at the coin for about 5 seconds, my gut grade on it was 25, might make 30 on a good day.

So, we know why it wouldn't grade 35....Bajjerfan owns all of the 35's.

And a good looking bunch to boot.

That lot is a good lesson in variation in Walkers, too. You look at the early dates, (1916, 17, 18....maybe further), and the skirt lines will never look as sharp as the later dates.

And looking at Miss Liberty's head and bustline, there is quite a variation at this grade, both due to strike and era.

The original coin may approach the above 16D as far as detail, (if not look)....but definitely misses the detail of most of the others.

It's a challenging coin to grade in low to mid-grade.

Definitely not XF, but it does look VF30 to me, as it did to others, and I like the
look of the coin just fine.

I would beg to differ....it is one of the most common of the early date walkers, given it's high mintage. Bruce Fox, though his landmark guide has become somewhat dated, listed it as R2 in XF/AU, and R1 in all lower grades, and I would concur with this. Even in grades up to MS64 it is not scarce.

I was talking GRADING of Walkers in general....not claiming the '18S is tough to find in particular. As you state, it's pretty inexpensive for the era, until you get to AU, (and depending on your definition of "expensive").

Ahh, gotcha, my bad....yes, the middle grades in particular seem to be all over the place.

The loosening of the standards for VF, and large price spreads from Fine to XF, have really
muddied this up. Best to be conservative and get coins that are strong for the grade/under graded, as you did here.
