    Sweet. I've decided from experience to stop asking members to not post World coins here. It's a futile endeavor. Honestly it looks better than a 64 to me. Nice!

    Thanks. I think you know this coin circulated in early America and is widely collected as part of the US colonial coins listed in the Red Book...French New World Issue; Billon Coinage of 1709-1760.

    Minted in France for use in the North American colonies of French Canada. And often made their way into New England. That is one sweet piece!

    Sou Marque coins were used in Colonial America.

    C = Caen mint mark (at 6 o'clock on the obverse)



    L = King Louis XV of France (note the XV at 2 o'clock on the reverse)



    Obverse legend = Abreviation of SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM (Blessed be the name of the Lord)



    Reverse legend = Latin abbreviation that roughly translates to Louis XV, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre

    Forget the popcorn as this is a french fries & french toast sticks thread. Nice newp and looks as nice as any in a 5 or 6 holder I've seen. Oddly since billion alloy had a decent percentage of silver I've never seen these with any sort of colorful patina as most are still bright or just golden brown.

    What is the coins composition? Were these plated in some way as many I have seen look to be plated.

    Here is mine I bought over 25 years ago in the Bowers and Merena Byron Johnson auction. The A is for the Paris Mint but I forget what the little fox is for.

    This is for comparison so you can see how nice the one in the OP is. I think with that one that someone took the first coin off the press and very carefully stored it.

    This is a billon coin. According to Robert Vlack in An Illustrated Catalogue of the French Billon Coinage in the Americas, "Billon refers to a soft alloy of silver, copper and tin, combined in such proportions as to render a silvery appearance, although it is less shiny and paler in color than sterling and hence the name 'white money'".
