Newp Blazer Frankie

AuroraBorealisAuroraBorealis Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭✭✭
This one started off to me in a 67* holder... I have it sent in to cross at any grade to our host and had a pretty good idea that it would end up in a lower grade... Yes as expected in ends up in a 6 holder but ends up with an addition of FBL...
Technically in my opinion it ends up in the correct grade and in the plactic I prefer... I believe I did the right thing and without a doubt it`s still the same coin and gorgeous regardless...
Who would have done the same thing and who thinks i`m crazy? image

    Wow. That's a wild one.

So you lost a point and the star but ended up with an FBL designation?

Glad you're happy with the decision. This is not my series so I wouldn't have anything to say on that, pro or con. It's a neat looking coin either way.

PS- and the TrueView is also an added benefit, IMHO.

I've paid a point for PCGS plastic more times than I care to admit.
I like the holders better and want consistancy in my collection.

That neon Frankie looks good in or out of any holder though. image

Thanks for sharing your cross over experience on this coin, AB. But I think that you were buying the toning and not the coin. Toning is never a positive impact on the grade with PCGS, unless it is Qustionable Color. Really nice toning like on your coin, does not seem to ever effect the numerical grade. I think that all coins should have a "color" grade, and this specimen could be a "TN" or toned coin. I am very glad that coins like this still exist and have not been dipped.

Who cares? Buy the coin, not the holder...especially in this case!

That thing is beautiful!!! Congratulations! Love it! image

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

In my experiences with crossing over from NGC to PCGS, I too have lost a point on more than one occasion...although there were a few that have straight crossed over.

Nice vivid colors that are beginning to overflow onto the reverse. Congrats on FBL!

I love it. The coin is stunning and reminds me of how one used to be able to find deep, vivid color from time-to-time when going through raw double mint sets. It has color that is not unusual for a 1958-D, but its intensity and complete coverage are, without a doubt, exceptional. I would have no issue with crossing it as you have done.

That's a looker for sure. Nice mint set toner. The bell lines look like a lock for FBL. I would keep it in that slab. I like the star and who really cares about the grade on that one? Congrats.

Sweet coin. Don't think the change in grade or attribution matters in this instance.

Very pretty coin. I'd bet you took at least a $500 haircut with the downgrade from MS67* to plain old MS 66. I would not have done that but I'm a penny pincher.

I agree that it is untrue. I have seen many '+' grades that appear to be attributable to desirable toning. Almost a pseudo-star designation.

In the Franklin series, an MS67, even with NGC is much better than a PCGS MS66.

I'd have simply had NGC re-holder and been happy with that.

If you simply HAD to attempt a cross, why not at the same grade?

    Way cool.

I'd prefer the PCGS 66FBL over the NGC 67* everyday of the week.

Now that I look at the price guide I may have to take that back. image

Ngc most likely gave it a bump to 67 for the color (superb eye appeal). If it was my coin I would of sent it in for designation review so ngc could add the fbl for a MS67*FBL image.

I would not have taken the route you did, however I am not driven by plastic brands as you are. I buy coins because I like coins not the plastic around them, to each their own. As to the coin it certainly suits your collection and I'll leave it at that.

In my head, I typically think of blast white coins Blazers. Oped my mind to the color blazer concept though. Thanks!

Not seeing the bottom bell lines. Is one service only counting the top lines or who does what there. Who really cares about that though on a coin like this, it's all about the color for this one, so the star gets it right IMO. Bet they would grade it the same as before if sent back.

Thanks for sharing, I've considered buying a 58 D in color before in the past. They are on my radar for sure.

Wow thank you so much for the great feedback everyone... Glad most have a liking for the coin...
One thing that has been proven time and time again... When it comes to the price guides/or estimates, they very quickly get thrown in the fire when it comes to monster toning...
When or better said IF I every part ways with any of my stuff I want the chatter to be "that is an amazing and solid graded collection!" image

Either way your opinion... I truley enjoy hearing the different views and ideas... I want to also make sure to run it by the forum from time to time to make sure i`m doing it right... image

I agree with the first part. Blazer means blast white to me too. As for the FBL designation, PCGS only considers the bottom two lines while NGC considers the top set as well. Given the different criteria, I believe both services got the designation right.

I'm guessing AB doesn't care about the price difference since the color is going to dominate the grade if (big if image ) he decides to sell.

    Great coin AB!

That cheek mark does seem to limit it to 66. So I would say "what a great coin and solid for the grade" image. But I also think you'll have no trouble getting it into a 66+ holder if you're inclined.

It reminds me a LOT of this coin I made about two years ago which is a little cleaner, except, yours is prettier! This coin graded 66, first time and 67 FBL the second. The right grade is 67- FBL. The image shorts the pop quite a bit but the color pattern is unmistakable.

I'd like my copper well done please!
