    Really hard for me to tell from these photos.

    If it was a raw coin that actually looked like this, I would think MS details,
    cleaned/retoned, possibly lacquered (at least on the reverse).

    I suspect though that it's actually much nicer in hand, and perhaps a 63.
    Large cents are difficult to photograph well, for me at least, especially when they
    are in slabs.

    I dunno about the color, but it looks nice enough to me.

    If the surfaces have not been tampered with I will say 63.

    Hard to say from the picture.... but low MS would be a safe bet.... really cannot tell if the surface is original... Cheers, RickO

    I'll go with an AU58 based on the photos. There looks to be some color breaks in the hair that might be attributable to some where. There is the mark on the chin that will limit it a bit also. That being said I could also see it going low MS range if the color breaks are not as they seem in the photos.

    PCGS AU58. I bought it raw as a 58, but had hopes of 62. The hit on the chin is the slab. It is very free of any marks.



    Early copper is not my forte, but I have trouble really seeing the wear. - especially compared to some 62-63s that I have reviewed from Heritage. I sort of hoped it would get the elusive AU58+ grade. I think it has to be one of the best 58s I have seen.



    As a new collector I would like some education from you all on the color concerns. Does it have to do with the splotchy coloring? Thanks.

    I would say it is better than AU but they may have deducted from the grade for the uneven color.

    I would not crack that coin out if I were you. The color is questionable.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
