An Indian Head Cent question.

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
The IHC is a convenient coin for a broader question, but would you buy a coin/variety where you couldn't really see what you were buying the coin for?? With the Cent in question, would you buy an 1864 L Indian Head Cent in a grade which didn't show the initial??

My short answer is, "No." I know that you can tell by the shape of the bust, but if the "L" is the distinguishing mark, I want to see it, even if it is weak.

It's like buying a 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter with no date but the right shape for Ms. Liberty's robe. It's like kissing your sister; it's just not sexy.

I'm with BillJones on this one.

I don't know how much wear it would take to obscure the 'L' as it's somewhat recessed, but I know I've seen it down to coins in VG.

another good example, Bill, and I agree. coins like this might have value and they are what they are, but I sometimes wonder why collectors aren't willing to just pay a little more for better detail.

NO. Ask Rick at Eagle Eye and he will say no to also. Always see what you are getting.

Paying a little more for better detail certainly seems the way to go, but in cases where a coin with that crucial detail costs a LOT more (as I would imagine to be the case with the 1916 SLQ), then some collectors are willing to compromise to fill the spot. To their minds, it is better to have a "compromise coin" filler than an empty hole.

I have stood on both sides of this divide, personally. There have been some sets I've been willing to accept compromise coins for, and others I haven't.

No. If I am buying a variety, I would like to see it. If I am buying it for resale, my customers would probably like to see the variety also.

One variety that comes to mind here is the 1847/(6) half, late die state, where NONE of the underdate is visible. Some people pay a premium for that variety, but I wouldn't pay more than about a 10% premium over a regular date 1847.

I would buy the top 20 varieties which are naked eye varieties, but recognize the risk involved.

Collectors like to cherry them and don't like paying retail.......the ones I cherried I made money on, the remainder........not so much.

There are a gazillion VAM dollars but people only focus on the top 50 or top 100 largely because many others are tough to see. Folks figure "why bother". I agree.

i want to see it if I'm paying for it

    along the same lines:

Charlotte and Dahlonega coins with a 'light' mm

and the 1911-D Quarter Eagle which is also known to come with a light mm

these trade at deep discounts to their well struck counterparts (and rightly so!)

Would I? Absolutely not. Spend a little more, or a lot and get the best you can. Down the road you will be much happier. Tough call on something like the 16 SLQ. Hate to see that hole, but pricey to see the date and details.

NO. From my perspective, I focus only on coins of high grade and not on the completeness of jy collection. Many collectors want to complete their collection. Nice thing about collectiing the high quality coins is that you are not overcome by great opportunities after you have filled a few holes.

No, that wouldn't work for me. I'm sure I sold plenty of 'L's' as P's because the initial didn't show. I saw the bust and knew it was an 'L' but if it isn't there, it's not an 'L'. At least, as far as I'm concerned.

That would be like buying a 55/55 Lincoln with an obliterated obverse just because you can see the die polish on the reverse.

    Not for me.....

Definitely not... the detail is the attraction, and without it, you may as well just look

at the Redbook or other coin pictures. Cheers, RickO
