Probably an old question...

I deal on the PSA side of sending in submissions and don't have to worry whether or not a card is a error variation. I know PSA will most times label it correctly. However, on your side it looks like I have to submit it as a error or whatever variation. I don't have all day to blow up every coin to find out if my Morgan dollar has a mustache or not...lol. I thought we are paying them to tell us what we have.

Don't feel bad, CardboardDude. I'm a coin guy and don't have time for all that minutiae, either.
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.
you have.... Not sure how far the graders go beyond that... perhaps someone can elaborate?
Cheers, RickO
But when you ask for an error coin to be validated it takes them more time to research it. There are many varieties of known errors and PCGS may not recognize/honor all of them. Some may not be published
So you are paying extra for the extra service.
Many coins do not need a variety payment as they stand on their own and that can be seen by just looking at the PCGS price guide. If it has it's own number then no variety fee is needed. For instance, the 1888-o Morgan Dollar Hot Lips has it's own number of 7308. No variety fee is needed.
The 1890-cc tailbar has it's own number and no fee is needed, but the 1891-cc spitting eagle needs the fee. It is a variety that PCGS recognizes but the fee is still required.
Confusing but the need to verify the variety does require time unless it's one of the majors that needs no research by the graders.
Now that I have confused you even further, just post the coin for us to view as we love to look at them anyway!

Errors: You must call them out, or for the most part, they will come back as Genuine. You must pay the "Error" fee to get the Error designation. I have never had a coin come back in an error holder I did not pay for.
Varieties: Some varieties are included in the grading price and some are not. You can tell by the little "+" sign when looking at the PCGS Coin numbers in the price guide. There are many varieties that are included. e.g. many 80/79 varieties. Many of HOT/TOP VAMs require a fee. If you are wrong it comes back graded without the designation, and rightly so because they are paid to check it. If however it has another variety, and it is one they acknowledge (HOT/TOP) they will add that one to your slab even though you did not ask for it as part of your original fee.
Too many are not worth the bother due to grade/condition issues or just common VAM's.
My advice is to take FOCUSED, WELL LIT, FULL FRAME with zoom capable images and just list them on Ebay.
(Nothing annoys me more than crap ebay auction images)
Give it 7-10 day auctions starting at .99 cent and wait for the VAMers to find it.
They will come and you will make more money for the time invested.
I know it's a technicality, but every coin is actually a die variety.
