2015 Platinum Proof Approved Design

2015 Platinum Proof

I like it and it should be a little cheaper to buy than previous years.

The reverse looks like Liberty is getting ready to swat the eagle with her torch ...

I like it too. I'm just wondering when the morphing of Miss Liberty (see reverse) will be complete.

I think it's a nice design overall. I hope the final version has more details on the eagle's feathers (and Michigan). Even more so, I hope her torch arm is updated.

If the coin is only going to be minted at West Point, would it be cleaner to not display a mint mark?

    that W costs extra.

Don't like it. Are the girl and eagle giant, or is it just a globe and not the real planet?

    Sun looks funny too.

Damn I'm getting really cynical about coins lately. Sorry.

You don't like the clip art effect? I agree with you.

The whole design is overdone. The "sun" and the Earth could be left out and it would improve the design.

US Mint Sculptor–Engraver Phebe Hemphill can probably assist with that.

The design is by US Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist Joel Iskowitz who designed the Arizona and DC state quarters.

I was recently surveyed by the mint. I majorly dinged them for Smartpost and the Design-by-Committee coins...

Give it the ultimate taste test. If your pole dancing daughter came home with it as a tattoo, would you praise or disown her?

That's pretty observant. There might be people in Michigan itself who wouldn't have noticed that.

There seems to be a size mismatch between Liberty and the eagle. The bird on the coin looks more like a miniature falcon:

I think it's horrible. A domesticated, subdued, diminutive eagle being dominated by a female figure that is supposed to be 'liberty'? And a setting sun in the background? Not sure what the implied intent was for this design, but it says a lot to me and it is not inspiring. But perhaps it is very suitable for our country's place in the world today. JMO...

(BTW... I will not be a buyer)

And I agree with the previous remark suggesting it looks like the eagle is about to be given a finishing whack....

I find it rather insulting for our country to have this on our coinage, but again, that is JMHO and to each their own....

Don't know, I just don't like the depiction of Liberty, the eagle, the composition, and I could go on and on. I just find the eagle ugly and diminutive, and Ms. Liberty to be devoid of feeling or passion - really quite cold. The whole conglomeration just doesn't work, not to mention just being too busy.

Don't think the Sun is "setting." The perspective is from space with the Earth in the foreground and the Sun in the background. On the Earth depicted, there would be some people near one terminator for whom the Sun is rising, and other people on the other side of the world for whom the Sun is setting. Happens all day long.

The designer must think a lot of herself too, most folks out their initials in a somewhat obscure place. Not an island the size of the Azores.

Why beat around the bush? It's really bad. The facial expression is lifeless. The hair looks like an artichoke salad. Also, notice the little hand reaching over the back of the head. What's that all about? The flame on the torch looks like a tongue...yuck! Look at the toes on the left foot. Whoa! The problem at the mint goes deeper than producing "coins-by-committee." I suspect that the designers, engravers, etc., are also selected by committee. Real talent is probably rejected in favor of no talent egalitarianism. It's hopeless.

Are the details on the coin going to be granular finish?, I'm not a fan of tht type of finish.

Yeah, the eagle appears to be of strange proportions / perspective. The left wing tip extending to the rim (and beyond) with the R and I on top of the feathers looks goofy.

They could always let Heidi Wastweet design some. She's on the CCAC already so it's just another step to designing the coins themselves.

Unfortunately, this laser-pockmarked finish for the frosting is the new norm.

I like it and will add one to my collection! Lady Liberty represents what our country stands for "Liberty, Freedom" (the largest) and the Eagle is larger than North America and the Sun how big does it need to beimage

GB, cool pics. Look at that eagle's eye. He's taking it pretty seriously. Good thing the camera didn't set him off.

Looks sort of like a North American Union "Amero" coin image

There are some things about the design that I like.

But one thing that does seem odd to me is look how short the upraised forearm is, from elbow to wrist.

And the back foot seems a little odd also.

    (ok, that's two things).

    PS:
Phoebe Hemphill is perhaps the best US Mint Sculptor (in my opinion).
But I don't know any artist that likes to sculpt something that was designed by somebody else.

I noticed that too, Dan. Her right hand seems to extend half way up to the elbow. I don't get it. Sorry to hear about your loss. You never completely get over it, but your dad will always be with you, just in a different way. You'll see.
