My Gold CAC Half Dime made it into the Pogue II Rarities Auction.

It all happened by accident. I was at the ANA show looking for Brian from Stack's-Bowers to simply say "hi". I couldn't find him and the Director of Consignment, what a nice guy by the way, asked if he could help. I was standing right in front of some really nicely toned Pogue coins and jokingly said I have a coin that should be in that auction. I had the coin with me because I was considering a show reconsideration at PCGS. (Decided against that by the way realizing the Gold CAC is far rarer) Anyway, the Stack's-Bowers rep says he would love to have it in the Pogue Rarities Auction. I thought he was kidding. He wasn't and I made an impulse decision to turn it over to him.
First time for me in an auction like this by the way. The images turned out OK for a catalog. The catalog does not capture the luster like mine do.
If you want to see the coin in person, it will be at the Long Beach show. Let me know if you see it and what you thought!

Congrats!!
Gorgeous No Stars Seated Half Dime.

I was originally under the impression that it was in an old NGC fatty holder. That was incorrect. It was raw for her whole life, up until a few months ago, hidden away in a safe. That is also cool!

In this case I don't know if I'd rely on the gold sticker to get a big price. I'd have been tempted to get an actual 67, 67+ or even 68. There's no way to know if it being "associated" with Pogue helps it or hurts it. It's auction estimate of $8K-$10K seems awfully low for what is essentially a lock MS67 coin. Maybe they are pricing it as a 66+ coin. In my mind the coin is worth more in a 67 CAC holder. But we'll see. There really can't be a prettier one than this. My gut feel says it might have done better in a standard FUN or ANA platinum/rarities night setting where it would shiner much brighter than the surrounding coins. Last time I saw a half dime this nice graded that conservatively was at Goldberg's Benson 1 in June 2002 (a PCGS MS66 no drapery half dime upgraded after the sale to NGC MS68). I graded that coin 67++.
Please TTT this thread when the coin goes off so we know the answers to these questions.

And some people say everything worth slabbing has been slabbed...
Cool coin, love it. Being the luster whore that I am, I like your pictures better than the stacks photos. Good luck in the sale!
surely you will always miss that one
i'd wish ya luck with the auction...but i think this is a case where no luck is needed

Very pretty coin. A case why coins shouldn't be dipped white.

<< <i>Gorgeous coin!! but should have been posted on the Registry forum to avoid the appearance of spam. >>
I might read the REG forum once a year, if that. And it's usually by mistake when I click the wrong link. The BST would be the logical alternative. Seeing as this coin offers so many intriguing possibilities in one single package, this is a good forum for it. Inquiring minds want to know. It's like a light beer commercial.....Better Taste.....or Less Filling? I'm hoping it ends up Better Taste for the consignor.
And kudos to you for the acquisition of one magnificent coin.
You will never replace it for less than you acquired it for. Bet !

I am not post an eBay auction here. One of my coins is in a Sotheby's auction. I am relatively sure that won't happen to me again!
Thanks to the other nice comments so far.

Hi TDN. +105.
<< <i>Already viewed the Pogue coins. Many of us won't get to see her in hand. Did the denticles hold the grade back? >>
That is a shame. It looks like it has a battery powering neon lights. NO dark toning at all, just the way it looks. You see so many coins brightened up with editing software. As far as the grade, it's just a miss. I am kind of happy since it became only the 3rd Gold CAC, and by far the highest graded one with the other 2 being MS63 and AU55. John called it a 67++.

I'd agree. Certainly no less than 106.0 which would net 90.2%. Losing the seller's fee is a no brainer (+100).
How hard is it to get a coin into the Rarities Auction?

If anyone has single coin auction consignments like this that have appeared on the Coin Forum multiple times, are gold stickered, have monster colors, been part of show and tell discussions on grading, stickerization, etc and then been invited late to join one of the major auctions of the 21st century..... I'd say bring them here one final time before they go to auction. If that's "spam" then I'll start to eat some again for the first time since the mid-1980's. You can't learn near as much on the BST or REG forums. Putting something like this on the BST is almost next to useless. The only thing it's missing is a rattler holder. We'll live with it.
When TDN is ready to sell the SP66 1794 $, by all means, spam away right here fella. Though something tells me the rank and file will beat him to it.

I'm curious as to what you called it for the party you bought it from.

I bought it from a dealer.
<< <i>This belonged on the BST board, plain and simple, in my opinion. Pure spam. I could post (50) posts a month just like this one. Each with a neat story of how the coin came to be consigned and why I believe it is undergraded as well. As MOC said, absolutely no offense to the OP. But there are either rules or no rules and the rules don't change depending upon which auction venue the coin ends up at or how the coin did at CAC. Just my two cents. Wondercoin. >>
I think it belongs on the Precious Metals forum, myself. And i do agree that it's a form of spam for the rich and famous. Crony capitalism is alive and well, too.
However , it reads like sour grapes. The "flipping" coin is a beauty. I don't see too many complaining about Charmy's posts.
There are only so many circles of trust. At some juncture we just have to fall in line.
I once had a dream about having a box of coins that I took to the CAC. It was regimented and militaristic. I knew we were under martial law, then.

I'm all for having opportunities like that ! Lots of dealers today would be so insecure as to make top tier certification/grading a condition of a sale.

I didn't mean to cause such problems here. I moved my initial post over to BST.
If someone wants to discuss the coin here I guess they will have to be the one to start the thread. Sorry!

Look - at least we all appear to have one mutual goal - to keep the US Coin Forum informative and to follow and respect the rules here.
Wabbit - I did not mention this in my first post - congrats on having owned a lovely coin and best of luck at the auction!

<< <i>The OP has shown this coin here on multiple occasions over the past year(s) or more. Never tire of seeing it. If this was the very first time, I would agree with the "spam" label. It's almost like a forum member going to auction...lol. On top of that, the coin was added late to the Pogue offerings. Some live auction lot viewers have already missed it. The auction photos do it no justice. That's too bad.

I have always wondered exactly what the Gold CAC sticker implies. I know it is stating that it would green sticker at the next higher grade, but on a 66+, are they saying it would easily sticker as a 67 or a 67+. Thanks for those that answer this question.

Quoted from a 2013 CoinWorld Article:
"What kind of coin gets a CAC gold sticker? CAC founder John Albanese describes it as a coin that could “easily green sticker at the next highest grade level.”
He adds that the vast majority of the coins that receive CAC gold stickers are not great rarities, but just relatively common coins that are exceptional for the grade."
There is speculation that coins receiving gold stickers are 1.5 to 2 grades higher than what is shown on the label.
<< <i>John called it a 67++. >>
Well now that's it's posted here and we can talk about it spam or not... It's a nice coin but obviously has a scratch if not a X in the left obverse field. Which makes me ponder about how grading has changed as 25 years ago it would have body bagged. 15 years ago you'd see something like this in a 64 holder. Within nearly the last decade coins with scratches would show up in 65 to 66 holders. Now in the last couple years 66+. Then the sticker which ignores the + calls it a minimum 67.
I'd be proud to share too, if I were you. That's a really nice half dime!
As for spam, yeah maybe. It's not the first time, won't be the last. Accusations by some just sour grapes, because they can't any more.
Best of luck with the sale.
