Cherry-picks, sour grapes and board etiquette

A few days ago, another board member posted a cherry pick I made on Ebay about a month ago. The thread became somewhat educational, showing some of the diagnostics and tips on detecting a dateless 1916 SLQ. The following day I acknowledged that it was I who made the score. Kudos and congrats followed. Yesterday afternoon I got a message from the Ebay seller asking about the coin (remember, this is one month after the sale). I replied to him: "I'm curious - why do you ask?" He replied back "I received a few emails asking if I knew it was a 1916...".

I can only assume it was someone(s) from this board who notified the seller. The timing is too coincidental. According to my understanding, this is a huge breach of board etiquette. Why does somebody do this? Sour grapes? Common sense and decency says you don't do this, there is nothing to gain and it just opens up a hornets nest. Now I've got an unhappy seller on my case.

Where to go from here? Well for starters, other than for Trade Dollars, which seem to have a more decent crowd, I won't be posting or acknowledging cherry-picks anymore. "You Sucks" aren't worth the aggravation of cases like the 1916 SLQ.

End of rant.

Emailing sellers is a total lack of class and shows their true jealousy.

Obviously, these loser emailers have no time and no 'coin wisdom' to hunt these bargains down on Ebay or anywhere else.

I'm not going to get involved into the 'rights or wrongs' of this purchase.

Personally, I'm totally fine with it.

Seller sells an item and buyer buys it........Case closed.

My congrats to the OP and a big thumbs down to those losers who emailed the original seller of this lot.

I did not post it. Another board member did along with the link to the Ebay transaction page. However, I did acknowledge it, which at that point was moot, since with the Ebay link posted anybody could contact the seller (and the seller can contact the buyer).

It's happened to me. Forum members contacting one of my sellers. Very unethical.

Some here have way too much time on their hands.

Why would he have the authority or power to do either of those things? It's not like eBay would/could force a return.

You are of course correct but it's not unusual for eBay sellers or buyers to make unreasonable requests. This can happen especially when a buyer has yet to leave feedback which he can use for leverage---"The coin is not as nice as your pic shows so let renegotiate the price." or "The slab has a scratch so send me back $10 so I can get it reslabbed."

This sucks. At least you have the coin- you bought the lot fair and square for what the seller was asking, and if you hadn't someone else would've for the same price possibly not even knowing there was a 1916 in the group.

There was a deal here a number of years back where eBay seller fairtraderz wanted more money from a buyer AFTER the auction was won.

There are many with too much time on their hands. I keep saying how happy I am that the panel of experts at eBay was finally abandoned. They were marking genuine coins as counterfeit left and right. Some of them are/were members here. Maybe they switched their downtime to notifying sellers when they got ripped!

Who cares if the seller knows? It is no different than selling a graded coin that someone gets upgraded and is worth a small fortune. That happens all the time.

I posted something about a year ago which alluded to this same sort of thing, collectors undermining and working against each other, and was sort of sloughed off as cynical. oh well, such is the forum.

I will only say that this place has "lurkers" who may be responsible for the e-mail.

It's unbelievable that someone would contact your seller. What's to be gained by that?

You've done no wrong, I applaud your ability to see something others did not and benefit from it.

Not posting your cherry picks wouldn't have helped in this case. Even if you hadn't acknowledged it was you, someone else posted it on a public board here for the world to see, and any casual surfer or board member could have notified the seller, even if you kept quiet.

I for one would love to hear more cherry-picking stories from you and from others.

Also we should keep in mind that a ebay cherry pick should be shared once in hand and no sooner.
If a seller who hasn't shipped is notified, odds are the transaction will be cancelled.

there was no foul there except for by whomever did email the seller (who got what he was after anyways a winning bid on his lot)

ya know the old saying...don't allow someone's action as such change you

Just to be clear, the seller hasn't asked for anything yet (I don't want anyone putting words into his mouth), other than the grade of the coin when I get it back from PCGS. As far as I'm concerned, nobody other than me and the person who buys it from me will know what the grade is. I'm certainly not going to post it here.

I have been lurking here a LONG time before i joined. After reading this I really don't know what to say. You got grumpy people and rats here in the crowd. No wonder why the younger generation does not get into the hobby!

on that too and I got a fiery note from them and a demand I send back and cancel the auction
....But, that what ebay is for, cherry picking.

I ignored the seller and did not respond.

Felt the sabotage you felt as well.

That is such a shame. People have no business messing in another's transactions. You did very well identifying that coin and deserve it. Sorry to hear this discourages others from posting cherrypicks... understandable, but really bad for the hobby and the forum. Cherrypicking is a part of the hobby, done it often myself. I hope people reconsider and continue to post finds...I know I will. Cheers, RickO

My comment back to the seller would have been "If they were sure it was a 1916, why didn't they bid on it?"

It was an open market transaction on the largest e-marketplace that exists...

98% of the folks here are here for the enjoyment of the hobby. To learn, share, and teach. I can understand how you feel but wouldn't base any decision on the other 2%. Keep Posting!! I know I will no matter who might get upset or jealous.

Some busybody here decided they were bored with life and wanted to stir the pot....asking the seller if they knew what they had. Duh. If he let it go like he did, of course he didn't know.

I am all for fairness, etc etc etc. In this case, fairness is that something was sold like it was, a chance was taken (using knowledge), and payment was rendered and coin received.

If it had been a dated coin where all the lot was all listed with a different date, then maybe there could have been an honest mistake on the seller's part. In this case, it was sold as it was, knowingly.

Would be interest to know who those interfering actually were in this case. We won't hear from them directly on that as they are obviously cowards.

Imagine what might have happened to this coin had you not had the technical skill
to recognize it. Most likely destroyed. Now it will be protectively encased and graded
and added to the coin's numbers. Congratulations, you have preserved a piece of
history and should be rewarded. Do not allow one or two selfish and jealous priks to
ruin your numismatic enjoyments. Thanks for sharing.

If I was in your position, I'd offer the seller a chunk of the profit from the eventual sale of the coin in exchange for the usernames of the people who emailed him... Even if I wasn't going to share them publicly, just so I would know. Karma hopefully will catch up to them.

Congrats on the pick though! Knowledge is power.

Usually the scu**ag is the under bidder who just lost out on a score but I think with this auction (the link has been edited out) the OP was the only bidder, so it makes perfect sense the scu**ag is on this site.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to know who did this?
