Summer FUN 2015 Thursday Show Report

It was an uneventful 90 minute drive to the show this morning with my son. Traffic can be tough sometimes but not today thankfully.
We got there about 9:15 AM, paid the $10 to park, made the 10 minute walk inside and then to lot viewing.
We checked in with the very nice Heritage staff and I viewed about 6 coins or so.
One of my primary goals was to view something for a forum member. The Heritage scans show some nice color and possibly
nice luster etc. I viewed the coin in hand and the nice color was actually a dark gray that had been over exposed in the online
images. The coin was not the wow coin I thought I would be viewing. The coin also happened to be stickered, not that it matters much.
I took some iPhone pics, forwarded those to the forum member and talked to him on the phone after lot viewing to provide my
opinion. It also had a couple of distracting hits that another coin a few months back did not have. If I am not mistaken, he will
not be a bidder at this point.
I had another coin in my watch list just because it seemed kinda cool and I wouldn't mind owning one at some point. The Heritage
images left a bit to be desired. I had close to zero expectations when picking the slab out of the box of coins. I was super impressed!
The coin was soooo cool in hand and now I will be watching the coin's auction closely, if not bidding.
The other couple of coins I viewed were really just out of curiosity. The Heritage images made them look very nice and when I viewed
them in hand, they were indeed very nice coins.
What's the lesson here? As others have said on these forums for years...if you are bidding online, without seeing the coins in hand,
it can be a real gamble. Always view them yourself or have someone view them for you if you can. Everyone has to do what is best
for them.
My son and I walked out, got our name stickers and went to the entrance of the show where the dignitaries were speaking prior to
the open. Shortly thereafter and we were IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let the real party begin.
Besides trying to keep my boy half-way entertained and fed, I did not have too many goals besides finding pretty round objects and
maybe Cherrypick a few Mercury Dimes. I guess one goal was to view every 1919 Mercury Dime that I could, looking for the elusive DDO.
If I could look through a few 1950s, 1960s and 1970s proof sets while locating a few special things then that would not be bad either.
As for other coins that might be of interest, I would know them when I saw them.
I was also keeping a lookout for a few specific date high
grade toner/flashy coins that another member was looking for.
We started down Aisle 600 (the last aisle) instead of Aisle 100 just to do it differently than I had in the past. This is what you call living
on the wild side, without a doubt! Holy Cow, my son made out like a bandit today! There are so many very kind folks that were eager
to spur his interest in collecting. The first dealer shout out goes to GULFCOAST COIN & JEWELRY (Table 609)! Thank you! They gave him a
Great Britain 1862 Small 8 Farthing in NGC VF25 BN. I look forward to teaching him a bit about the coin this weekend.
We never made it very far without a dealer or vendor wanting to say hi and help build the coin collector interest in him.
While chatting with LowCountryCoins.com, they learned that my son had just received a 1964-1985 Kennedy Half Coin Album at the show we
attended last weekend and that we're going to work together to fill it. The owner quickly went to a large folder of coins and pulled out 4
Mint State Kennedy Half Dollars for him! So cool. Their young daughter, close to my son's age, was working the floor to make a little money
for herself. My son liked her very much! So cute! They were from South Carolina so she also had a very sweet accent.
My son saw the "Panning For Gold" area and after a couple of aisles, we went over there for a bit of entertainment. After working through 2 pans,
we found one small flake of gold that we kept in a small jar of water as a souvenir. There was also a Kids Area where kids could go spin a large prize
wheel. He gladly participated and won "Any Mint Set"...after asking him his year of birth, they handed him a sealed Mint Set. Very Nice!!!
After that, my boy let me know that he was hungry. Since I tried to save a little money on the day...I had packed our lunches in a small cooler
early that morning so we went to the hallway to eat around 11:30. It was pretty quiet and nice to sit down for a few minutes together.
After all of that....it was back to some serious business of SEARCHING FOR COINS! And that search for coins was frequently interrupted by
snack needs or someone wanting to give my boy a token, elongated cent or something else cool. My boy was even given 3 pretty cool casino
gaming tokens. Thanks Frog Pond Collectibles!
I failed to locate a 1919 DDO Mercury Dime. Not a big surprise, just disappointing of course. I looked for other Mercury Dime varieties to cherrypick
but I couldn't find anything worth taking home...even though I did see a couple circulated varieties that I could have cherrypicked.
At one table, I spent a few minutes going through a bargain bin. It was entertaining and I picked out a few $1 coins for my kids.
I have had a recent interest in 20th Century Toners and this show really had little to offer. I did find a mild toner in a proof set for my birth year but
decided not to spend the money considering it wasn't GREAT. On the next to last aisle (200s), I finally came across a coin I had to take home.
1955 5c NGC PR 67 Monster Toner
I have already failed miserably at trying to photograph it. Proof toners are really difficult, especially when they are in a slab.
It has just about every color of the rainbow in it. I might send it to PCGS and let them photograph it for me when I send a few other items in.
My boy was very good and we had a pretty good time together. The show was a success! A note about the show however, I think it was about 2/3
the size of the last couple of years' Summer FUN events. That was a surprise and a bit disappointing. I may not have been looking for expensive
special items but I do tend to notice the material when it is everywhere...like at Winter FUN. There weren't many great toners anywhere...besides the
common Morgan Dollars and even then I did not see anything spectacular. The size of the show was smaller and the foot traffic seemed to be less as well.
The coins I was looking for in high grade flashy toners for a forum member....nothing even close!
We left close to 5:30PM and the travel home was also uneventful besides a few predictable slower spots....nothing bad at all. It was a good day
and we were able to make it through the entire show so I do not have to go back tomorrow.

I agree. I spent time with him 2 years ago at summer seminar and we chat at every show we both attend. Great guy.
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Teddy, we don't have those filled yet. Your offer is very nice but I think I will take him roll hunting at a few banks. It shouldn't take too long to fill the album. I haven't gone roll hunting at banks in quite some time so that will be fun for us to do together.
My two nicely toned Proof Nickels that are in NGC holders will be taking a trip to California soon for a date with a portrait photographer and get some new clothing. I can't wait for those photos either!
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

Pictures of the bourse a few years ago were all old white men but now their are younger and
more feminine faces in the mix. There are still too few "minorities".
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

The Summer FUN is just a shadow compared to the big-un, barely worth the drive.
I too seek modern toners. Not much available there except Morgans --got a few nice toners.
One guy had a spectacular 1921 toned morgan PCGS63 but wanted $700!!
I would have spent some money at the show, but my wife needs a new car, so I wasn't in a buying mood. That said, it was nice to go to a large show, and my daughter didn't mind the side trip to Epcot and the Magic Kingdom.
Indian Head $10 Gold Date Set Album
<< <i>I stopped by the FUN show on Saturday with my daughter and perused the tables. My daughter (and I) panned for gold, and my daughter left with a bag full of coins and foreign notes given to her by dealers sharing their love of the hobby with the next generation. I let the owner of Lowcountry know his kind deeds were being recognized on a coin forum. Both of the owners are friends of mine, and all of the folks who work there are good people.
