That's what I thought. The date on the 1996 sits in a "clouded field." That doesn't make sense to me. Dates normally sit right on an unobstructed field. But, I don't look at these very often. If fake, it's a magnificent one.

Both have fingerprints though.

The one on the left is accepted into IRAs by the U.S. Government and recognized as well as investment grade, by the taxing authority known as the Internal Revenue Service.
The bullion coin from 1996 is worth about the same as the proof. The item on the right, I suspect, is worth about silver price , plus or minus a couple dollars. Without a test, I'm merely going by what my eyes perceive and what I've read. And my momma said "Joey, don't believe anything you read and only half of what you see "

It most likely is stamped "copy" on the reverse as in the provided link. It is a silver round....(on the right)...no lawyers needed

The one on the right is an obvious fake. It could be the way and angle the photo is taken, but there are some very subtle differences in detail that lead me to also conclude that the one on the left could be sketchy. I would need to see it in hand or at least have additional images. Also, what about the reverses?

What's the point of this exercise? Seems like it might be worthwhile if you asked 20 random people on the street since these are the kind of folks most likely to get duped if they were buying silver.

The one on the right is worth $100K to a lawyer. Anyone who buys the one on the right, thinking it is an official US Gov minted silver eagle deserves to be duped unless it was advertised as such, then the seller belongs in jail.

most understood the point of the thread but Tomthecoinguy apparently chose not to respond, though I suppose he may be one of the "right" choice guys. the other three, either a mistake or to intentionally skew the results. I doubt any rational person with only a modicum of research would determine the wrong answer.

I would say it is a viable asset to our YN out there that might get duped instead of just random people on the street. I get that from this thread, help for the younger crowd. Kris

How many of them would even see it? It sounds a lot like those NRA surveys of members that tell the NRA over and over and over again what they already know. I would hope everyone here would be able to see the difference/s between the 2 coins, but if you put a date [even 1985] in the proper place on the coin on the right you could fool a hell of a lot of people.

I would hope everyone here would be able to see the difference/s

the reverse is even more starkly obvious and the diameter is wrong. an ASE is 41mm and the other looks smaller in the picture, probably a typical silver round at 39mm. the two aren't even close. it paints a sad portrait of our Judicial system but in view of the old McDonalds coffee case nothing surprises me anymore.

I'll pay the same $16.17 cents for either. I'll be happier owning the one on the right though so I don't have to try to figure out what the phantom premium should be .
