The Replies count to this thread is off by 13. Before this post it listed 740 replies which should be 37 full pages and 1 post at the top of this one using the default forum settings of 20 posts per page. The actual number of replies to this thread is 753 (37 full pages + 14 posts on this one). It happens frequently in longer threads and seems to be related to website issues when posting that show the Cloudflare page. Most of the time the posts actually get added to the thread, but the Replies counter does not increase. This also leads to a lot of the duplicate/triplicate posts because the user doesn't see them in the thread for several minutes. It's either a bug in the FuseTalk forum software or the queuing mechanism between Cloudflare and the forum software when responses timeout.

What do you consider to be a "master" Heritage set, or is there such a thing ? Every year I see ebay offers for master sets that involve these components...500 base set with the SPs, and 4 of the insert sets--Baseball Flashbacks/News Flash Backs/Then & Now/ New Age Performers. Here is an example

    Text

For every year through 2015 I have those components of each set. Through 2010 I also have all the "variations" to the 500 card sets as listed on this site:

    Text

After 2010, the number ( green tints for example) and scarcity of some of the SSPs made the task seem impractical to me from both a time and expense standpoint.

I know too there are Chromes and panels and other related products which I have not fully pursued with each set.

Does anyone here collect what they consider "master' Heritage sets, and if so what do you include in them ( it might have been better to start a new thread on this)

I have all the Topps regular sets whose format is replicated in the Heritage sets. In my regular sets I have made them all master sets, which for me meant including any variations listed in SCD, Becketts or The Registry. While opinions may differ on whether other variations should be added or some that are included taken out, generally that is what constitutes a master set for the traditional Topps sets.

What would be the rationale for excluding variations from the definition of a Heritage master set. I realize that most if not all Heritage variations/errors are "manufactured", but still wonder why it has become accepted to exclude them from a Heritage master set. And, for that matter why the 4 subsets are included but stuff like Chromes, panels

Not seeking an argument about all this, only to understand the rationale from an overall hobby standpoint. Is there a difference between a "master" set and a "super" set image

    The cost to complete.

And the scarcity of the SSPs, Black bordered chromes, etc. Also, the Set has at least 20-25 different sub-sets, I think there needs to be a reasonable cut-off.

Why stop at variations, panels and chrome, what about the stamp cards, coin cards, mini card sub set, autos...the list goes on and on, just look at the sell sheet. That would be very costly and difficult to complete. And then go do it again the following year.

Just my opinion, the four sub-sets can be found in case (or very close to complete), the other stuff is novelty to sell product and give the Sell Sheet some buzz...

    Hi Al.

You are correct in the sense of a TRUE master set....but with modern sets, a TRUE master would include every autograph, every parallel (which some are numbered 1/5) and some of the cut autographs in this set are 1/1, so no one really seriously tries for that super duper true master. Although i do know a guy working on a 2012 SUPER DUPER master, but thats a special kind of masochism.

When heritage folks refer to MASTER set, they really typically mean the attainable cards, which excludes the parallels, and relics and autos.

MASTER heritage sets typically refer to the basic 1-500 (base + short prints) and the insert sets (3-5 depending on the year). Sometimes there are retail exclusives like koufax/ryan this year, or red/blue borders in the past....these aren't normally in the master set either.

but the great thing about collecting is everyone can build whatever they want and decide for themselves. With more parallels, and many more varying degrees of super short prints and manufactured errors in recent years, heritage has gotten more complicated.

Parker and Mick---thanks for the responses. I get the virtual impossibility and expense of all the extra stuff. But if for example I collect a master 1967 Topps set, it is the base set and any hobby recognized variations ( I realize there may be some differences among SCD, Beckett and The Registry on what "official" variations are recognized for the set). A master Topps set would not include pack inserts or test sets from that year, like for example the 67 Punch Outs. And a 1984 master set would not include Tiffany. So my question goes really to why the master set does not include variations to the "basic" 500 set. Maybe the fact that such variations and their rarity are intentional ? Expense and rarity alone is not a criteria on the regular sets. If you want a master 1952 set you need a Campos black star and two Mantles

Also thanks to Marc ( mikescmidt) for telling how in the heck to find page 39 of this thread imageimage

    Hi Guys,

I haven't collected Heritage in two years, but I am now interested in putting together the chrome /999 set for 2015 Heritage.

As I am just starting, I still need them all. If you have a lot of these, laying around and occupying much needed space, please let me know as I'd be interested in buying at the right price.

I'll be checking my messages constantly, thanks again!

    Hi Al (bishop).

The "master" moniker for heritage really just happened...when first it came out in 2001, master meant all base cards, all variations, and all basic inserts (classic renditions, nap, t&n) and all short prints. it was a way to distinguish between just the "base" set and a set that had the base plus the shorter prints and usual extras. Even in 2001 there were 110 chromes, 51 autos (in red and blue varieties), clubhouse collection relics, army relics, and the mays so-called "auto-proof" buyback auto....all of which weren't typically considered part of the master.

"Master" has no perfect definition...it could mean something different to each collector. I suppose your idea of a "super" set would mean a copy of every possible item that was issued with a particular set.

A Master t206 might mean 524 to some, 520 to others and 518 to others. a super set would most likely be the 4000 different front/back combinations.

Back to heritage, the master moniker seemed to be more clear in the older years...in recent years (starting in 2008 with the super short prints) the term has a little more varied meaning from collector to collector. Where does one draw the line? are ssp's part of master? What about medium and harder level variations like the color variations (hard), throwback (insanely hard), and action variations (easy)?

Everyone has to make their choice, but the bare minimum that seems to be universally agreed on is that a master will at least include all base cards, the regular short prints (75 per year since 2008), and the 4-5 basic inserts that are typically found in every other pack (new age, flashback, news, then&now, etc).

Personally, I like that there are lots of variations to possibly chase, but i am lucky in that i can avoid chasing the tough pulls without becoming worried or obsessed that my set isn't "complete". I know a lot of folks don't have that ability!

    - jim

Thanks for the response Parker. I have a Topps set run from 48 and 51 to 2015. I have tried to do all them in master form, which for me included any variations recognized in SCD, Beckett or the Registry. In some sets, but not all, I have also pursued the back stock variants. Diehards would also include them in a master set

I have all the Heritage sets and have them in master form as you defined it. Up through 2010 I also did any variations. Starting in 2011 the vast number of variations, and their designed scarcity, caused me to drop that endeavor. But as a carry over from my regular Topps sets, I think a master should include all variations, but not the typical insert sets included in Heritage master sets. For many/most Topps sets there insert sets and test sets. Although I collect all of them, up to 1994, I do not treat them as part of a master set, and think that is how most of the hobby agrees.

But as you say, to each their own, there is no official hobby standard I am aware of. Thanks again for the response
