I can't believe I've now posted over 7200 times here. I don't think I've even farted that many times since 2007.

Anyway, picked up a box and 6 packs at lunch today. Ripping to commence in 4 hours

This sounds crazy, and probably is. Several years ago, someone on this thread wrote that they thought some of the SPs were shortprinted
more than the others. I can remember thinking there is no way this could be accurate. However, over the years, I really wonder if there
is some truth to that. I have wanted to trade with a couple of people this year, only to find out that SPs they needed were the same as the
ones I needed. Coincidence, I suppose so. There are some of you that will think this is totally ridiculous, which is most likely true. But, then
again, who would put a fake bubble gum smell on the back of a card? A company that was trying to make a whole lot of $$$$.

Which ones do you think were the tough ones this year, Craig?

In past years I may have agreed since I seemed to pull doubles and triples of some SPs out of my hobby and retail boxes but not the ones I still needed. However, since I bought a sealed hobby case this year and last I was able to complete the SP set both times from the one case so collation seems pretty fair (at least within a sealed case).

    Andy--

    Numbers: 430, 437, 454, 455, 458, 476, & 486. These seem to be very hard to come by-- perhaps

all in one box? Not sure.

Hmmm...four of those seven came from the last box I opened in my case: 437 (Hamilton), 455 (Altuve), 458 (Lester) and 476 (Holland).
  • Options
I was fortunate enough to get a complete master set out of my case. The last 2 came in the last box though.

In the earlier sets where some of the sp's were in the lower numbers, some cards can be a pain to find at a reasonable price. I suspect this is because there are collectors that only collect the non sp's but need the lower number sp's to fill in the "holes". Thus creating increased demand for some sp's. An example is the 2005 Heritage set where Jim Edmonds, Kaz Ishii, and Cesar Izturis remain a thorn in my side, nearly two years after I decided to start collecting those sets.

Are the ssp's not as "short printed" as in the past? In previous years ssp's seemed to sell for quite a bit more than this year. I've been able to win several ebay auctions with bids under $30, some under $25. Or is there just less interest in the ssp's this year?

I got 1 SSP & have seen several of the same one on ebay. You may be right about that.

I have a lot of experience with this and see a hundred heritage wantlists a year at least. And its true that everyone tends to be needing the short prints that are in the low #s, (pre 2008 they were mixed all around) This definitely leads to vary rare sp's, but I do not really think that they were manufactured by topps in different ratios.

By far, the most rare sp, and it is on nearly EVERYONE's list is the 2005 #20 jim edmonds. I can never keep that one in stock.

Posada's and Jeters are always tough to find and keep around but that is mainly due to demand and that they are yankees. Same issue with Bernie Williams SP #82 from 2002.

But no real explanation for #20 Edmonds. The #260Iztauris and #79 Ishii are much more readily available and I would attribute their rarity to simply being accidentally discarded as base cards (as was #5 todd helton, #30 Hideo Nomo, and #33 vlad, and #292 sweeney. But edmonds is a whole 'nother category!

Just ripped my 3rd and likely final Hobby Box.

    Ad Panel
    7 SP
    3 NAP
    3 T&N
    2 NFB
    2 BFB
    1 SSP
    1 ER? (60)
    1 Chrome /999
    1 Black /66
    Kemp Relic
    image

No auto or punch board in my boxes. Oh well. It was cool getting a black, but I gotta say not only is the hit rate disappointing, but the photos are pretty lackluster, outside of the action variations.

I'll be sorting Sunday and hopefully have my needs/have list by Monday.

Following up on my previous post, I just won a ssp Shelby Miller traded (1:2310 packs) for $16.01. I now have eight of the twelve ssp's and have paid what, in previous years, might have bought me two cards. The throwback uniforms (1:3310) seem to be where the money is going, since they are more short printed than the ssp's. Are they then sssp's?

I thing the last 3 years have been slow trading. I guess it's because if anyone buys a full case you end up with a master set or very close to one.
I am stuck right now there is much more I want and I lost my job of 34 years lol I should have never started this project this year. I will post what I have to trade soon.

    My Needs are

    Action variations 300 McCuthen 444 Bautista 447 Sale 450 Puig 455 Altuve 462 Hernandez 472 Kimbrel 473 Gonzalez 483 Wainwright 497 Darvish
