Code Cracking

For starters, the easiest way to spot some of the variation short prints is on the back of the card in the fine print. Like a lot of other sets from Topps, there's a small code at the end that connects to different types of cards. The last two digits in this code are the key. Here's what to look for in the base cards and the various types of variations:

•Base - end in 53
•Base SP (#426-500) - end in 58
•Errors - end in 59
•Traded Player - end in 60
•Action Image - end in 62
•Color Swap - end in 63
•Throwback Uniform - end in 61

Three blasters costs me as much as 1 Hobby. Yielded same number of packs and roughly same number of FB, NAP, T&N. In the Blasters I got a Ryan or Koufax exclusive in each. But in the Hobby I get a Topper, auto/relic, and a better shot at a Chrome/+.

On an impulse buy, if I find myself at Target or WalMart, I'll still buy a Blaster, but I think the Hobby are the better deal.

Thanks for the advice on retail. Look like I will continue to buy hobby if I buy more, it really isn't drying up. I opened three boxes today. First two were weak, but the last was a purple
chrome hot box, with a nice Roger Craig Red Ink in it...nice to pull an autograph of a guy who have actually heard of! Also pulled some nice Chromes and Refractors...Abreu, Tanaka, Wright....
Also pulled two action variations in that box. I will try to add to my trade list.

i did forego buying a second case and put that $600 to work on ebay and here is roughly what i have been able to obtain:

46 #/566 refractors
103 purple refractors
blue ink autos of: marichal, brock, kaline, niekro
red in autos of: cepeda

that my friends would be an impossible case break, but one that would be hard to beat!

my case costs $700 each, so technically i have $100 to spend on more sp's.

Gum Stain cards are 1-500 with NO number designation at the bottom. Check your cards good. Usually a good way to tell is look at the black part on the back.
