Would you trade up your coin collection for a 50/50 shot at 10 million dollars?

braddickbraddick Posts: 25,113 ✭✭✭✭✭
You pick heads or tails on a coin flip. Comes up the way you select, ten millions dollars, tax free, is entered immediately into your bank account.
If the coin flip comes up the other way, your full coin collection (no fair hiding any) is given to Heritage to sell with all the proceeds going to a charity of your choosing.

"YES" to the gamble, or "NO"?

I won those 10 1933 Doubles in the You won. thread.I have six left for myself after paying my lawyer. And I'm keeping one....the finest one...for myself.

$10M/5=$2.0M.So I'm looking to collect $2.0M average for my '33's in the market place.Reasonable expectation I think.Finest known (maybe) 1933 Double Eagle....$$$$$????....buku bucks. Fitty bucks for the rest of my collection....

Can I play after unloading my five '33's in the marketplace and burying the finest known (maybe) '33 Double under my Rotweiler's doghouse in the back yard with the rest of my collection?

I do have a few rolls of uninventoried wheats I dug out of the ground that I would be willing to put up for the opportunity to play.

Would that be coin collection enough to play for the $10M?

Trivia fact:$10M in Benjamins weighs 100 kilos (220 lb.)

    No!
Chance of losing your coins if you lose ~100%
Chance of collecting if you win ~ 0%
Chance of winning ~ 0%: nobody would make this offer if the contest were not rigged!

Since my entire collection is worth slightly more than $1000 I would definitely take the shot.

A 50/50 shot at 10 million dollars should cost 5 million dollars, for anyone with any statistical knowledge at all. I doubt very much that most of the posters here have anywhere near 5 million dollar collections to put up. I think the question would better be place with a one million dollar bet, or even better, a one thousand dollar bet.

    Gambling.... hmmmmm....

Why not just take the OP at face value of what is written? If you get the chance you/someone will flip a coin and if your call is correct you get $10 mil; if not well you know! How hard is that? Why does everybody have to qualify every hypothetical put up here?

I consulted with my hypothetical rottweiler. Our answer is an unequivocal NO.We would go with TAILS if we did play, however.

It's implied that the prize would be large enough so that ANY taxes would be paid out and you would NET $10 mil! Not hard to figger.

Statistically, I agree of course. However, psychologists will tell you that most people hate losing more than they enjoy winning. So, I am not at all sure that is the correct analysis either. I would have a very hard time taking this bet and my collection is worth a lot less than 5M.

With $10 million in the bank, you could probably arrange to buy many of your favorites back.
