A couple of modest early half dollars - GRADES REVEALED in 1st post

lkeigwinlkeigwin Posts: 16,895 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thanks for the comments and opinions. You can always count on that here. image

PCGS graded the flowing hair F12. I would have guessed 15, but then I'm the owner. The 1806 was called an XF40. Fair enough.

Thanks for playing!
Lance.

--------------

I don't collect earlier halves prior to the turban head. At least not yet. Still, I wanted flowing hair and draped bust examples. So here are two I recently acquired.

Yeah, they're well apart in grade, appearance, etc. But they do have one thing in common. Cost.

Guess their grades, if you care to.
Lance.

Very nice. Not nearly as modest as my examples. image

I hate being the first to throw a guess out there. Not my series, and until yesterday I'd never owned an example of either. All of that aside, I'll guess VF20 on the FH and XF40 maybe XF45.

    They're both very nice!

Lance: Congrats on picking up those attractive early Half Dollars that are eye appealing regardless of their grade.

However, just for fun I'll take a stab at their grades...

    1795 Flowing Hair: Fine-15
    1806 Draped Bust: XF-45

I won't guess because I think I seen the flowing hair half in auction but I love both of them. I want a flowing hair half myself. They are tough to find that nice in that grade.

Really nice coins. The FH I think F15, the DBH XF40?

(I think your are modest in describing them as "modest!")

Those are both nice coins, I think the 1795 makes VF23, and the 1806 XF48

1795 O-105A PCGS VG-10 to F-12 (depending on if it was net graded or not).

1806 O-115 (Mid die state) PCGS VF-35 to EF-40 (I am leaning more towards 40)

Better jump into the early ones now Lance while they are more affordable...this could change in the coming year. image

    Nice coins btw! image

Wow, I love the look on that first one! I'll guess F12 on that one. XF40 on the other, she's a real looker also!

Nice coins. I'll guess 12 and 35, respectively, but either could be a grade higher on a given day.

EDIT: Revising my guess on the first coin to 15. Wouldn't be surprised by 40 on the second, either.

These pieces are all that modest. They are very nice pieces. image

I would grade the Flowing Hair piece as a Fine-15 although I could see it in a VF-20 holder. The 1806 is probably has enough luster to rate an EF-45. I would be reluctant to call it AU-50 because the wear is fairly obvious on the obverse.

I don't know how to grade the early one but the 1806 would be around 30±5 depending on surfaces in hand. They are both very nice!

Love em both, but the FH is scrumptious!! FWIW I think they are both worthy of an uptick. FH strikes me as shot 20. And 45 on a good day for the DBH.

Interesting. The bustie I agree with - very nice look BTW. The FH dollar is harder to understand. The rims & lettering are exceptionally strong for the given grade. The central devices are weaker in comparison, but not that bad. All together there's a strong case to be made that they've net graded something. The fields look unusually uniform - in fact the whole coin does. Maybe they think it had an old polishing or cleaning. I dunno. FH grading is hard to decipher compared to my usual series.

I don't think so. They're as-minted, therefore I think they don't care so much. These aren't that distracting in any case.
