I hate buying raw , but this has a mintage of 3920 and a pop of around 90 between the 2 grading companies . A must have for me . Opinions ???

Hard to tell from your pics but it looks like it may have been cleaned.

Looks real but cleaned. Usually fake gold coins are common dates because the rare dates get too much scrutiny from buyers.

Check the pop reports. Not a rare date even though it's the key to the series. When counterfeiters make their dies they use a high grade coin as a model to cast their dies or use one of several transfer processes to create their dies. High grade gold coins for this purpose are far more available among the common dates. As far as the 1911-D $2 1/2 gold coin, the counterfeiter can use an 1911 to make the obverse die and any common D mintmark coin (e.g. 1925-D) to create the reverse die.
