Original Pair of Seated 1858-o NEWPS! :)

These two have been family for quite some time before i finally stumbled upon them, reportedly coming from the same source and showing spectacular originality!
They are both tough to find once in AU, and i am happy to have them!

I was expecting to see two 1858-O halves, one of the most common Seated half issues. Or maybe a common 1858-O half dime. But it's a crusty, original dime and a crusty, original quarter! That 1858-O quarter in AU is a monster coin. I have a dipped & retoned AU for this date, and people still salivate over it. I virtually never see an original XF or better 1858-O quarter. Other Seated collectors have told me the same thing. In the Seated quarters, only 1840-o, 1854-O, and 1856-O are readily available above VF, with the 1840-o ND being the most common by a country mile. I will defer to the dime gurus for the other piece, but it's a scarce date over there in Dime World, too.

Those two would be hard to beat. I love the nice even grey color.
The surfaces look smooth and clean too as far as I can tell.

I love them both.

I've always liked the 1858-0 quarters and dimes. Since the mid-1970's they were 2 of the most underrated dates out there, especially as you went higher in grade. I built a roll of 58-0 dimes in the 1970's.

I loved this date so much that I decided to build a gem 1858-0 mint set in the 1980's. I bought the gem dime in 1982 and the gem quarter in 1983. Both of those coins are probably still the finest knowns today imo.
Oddly, I never got gem examples of the half dime or half dollar because they were way too expensive for slightly scarcer dates I settled for MS63/64's on those 2. Gene Gardner ended up with my dime and quarter. In grades
above VF-20 the dime is challenging though I think the price guides have finally caught up. Problem free coins on either the dime or quarter are not easy to find in any grade above Fine. Problem free AU's of either are real tough.

I still kick myself for selling my MS62 1858-0 25c back in 1989 for $500. I had bought it at a Superior auction in 1988 for $450. No one cared back then. And no one (but me) figured the 58-0 was better than the 56-0, 57-0
or 59-0 in unc. At one time I owned 3 uncs. James Stack and Norweb did not have unc examples of the 58-0 25c or I would have bought them. I bought every unc I ran across in the 1980's....3 coins total.

He found the toughies. The half dime and half dollar are a cinch. In fact, there's a current thread showing a nice AU55 58-0 half ("my new seated liberty trio").
