<< <i>its almost miraculous that the 1849 is available in just about any grade while the 1850-1852 are such prizes when found >>
I actually find the 1849 to be only slightly more common than the 1850, if at all. 1851 and 1852 are a different matter. This coin is a real nice example of the date, and it's no slouch in that grade, with pretty rim toning to boot.
Now what really surprises me is that there no big letter "S" on the back, given the OP's tastes! I was sure this would be an 186X-S when I opened the thread.
I owned a beautiful 1849 PCGS MS64 ogh back in 2002 that only cost me $3400 or so. It was higher end too. I had a slightly nicer 56-0 in 64 that I felt was a great upgrade candidate. But after 5 successive 64's on that one I gave up....and figured the somewhat scuffier 49 had NO chance ever. I sold that 1849 to dealer Dave Carr sometime around 2006. Imagine my surprise when I see it show up on a PCGS seated quarter registry set in MS65....pop 1...highest graded. Same coin - same look - untouched since I sold it. Now that one hurt.
What hurt more is that the dealer I sold the 56-0 to ended up dipping and stripping the coin....puttied it...and got a 65 grade. That was one wonderful and original looking pq 64....gone forever. The irony is that after enough tries I'm sure that coin would have gone 65 eventually.....might have needed 10 or more tries but it would have upgraded eventually. I call that my "only" seated quarter that was ever graded correctly. Because no matter how many times I submitted it, it always came back the same grade...64....exactly what it really was (ie no 63's, no 65's). Oh the joys of seated quarters.
Boosibri's coin doesn't have the often seen broken strip reverse. I can't recall anymore but I think it might be tougher to find it without that reused reverse.
