2015 High Relief Design Candidates - UPDATED 1/27

Some are very nice, others not so much. At least there will be a Gold and a Silver version.

Which ones strike your fancy? Of course your exquisite taste will be over ruled by the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) and Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC).

My first glance picks are:
OBVERSE, 07, 14, 16, 18, 19 and my top pick 20
REVERSE, 01, 08, 13, 15 and my top pick 12

Like reverses 7,8, and 12.

Any of the more detailed designs will look great though. Looking forward to seeing it in coin form.

You have got that right. If it is really PC, I'll pass.

I thought that this might be a larger version of the St. Gaudens High Relief design. I didn't figure that it would be like one of the platinum coins.

The obverse's range from simple to overkill. Nothing really strikes me as a great design.
A couple of nice eagles though.

Some look like they were borrowed from the Mexican Libertad coins.

This one looks like it was in a fashion show

Bottom line---If I like the design and it's not overpriced, I'll buy one. Otherwise, I'll pass on this one.

As usual, the designs would be fine for a painting or drawing, but not for coinage. Only a few of the design concepts are feasible for a struck coin. The Mint should hire descendants of the early U.S. Mint engravers (1793-1830s).

What is keeping that heavy spiked tiara from falling on her face ?

This "long neck" is simple but pretty nice.

A lot of hair and a fuzzy fern.

Hypnotized by the olive branch.

This looks like some type of religious experience I'm not familiar with.

I wouldn't hold a flame that close to my face (or my bare hand). She must have some special powers. I like this design ok, though.

Something odd about that face. What is the sword stuck into ?

Look out ma'am, a great Eagle is about to attack you from behind ! Too bad your sword is stuck in your butt.

The Eagles are generally pretty nice. I'd vote for this one.

Wow is right, some really horrible designs there. I feel like they are trying to cast for a reality show. Trying to keep some style to my picks, I would love to see O18 or O22, a nice representation without too much angel wings or PC to cloud it up, and R11, to keep it related to designs that have passed the test of time and pay homage.

Seems that way to me too. Many of the designs are just way too busy.

My choices would be O3 (simple and dignified with superior lettering) and O14 (Fierce warrior, I dig her don't mess with us 'tude.), and R2 and R10 (I like the outer rim but not sure how the coin would strike up.)

Seriously, O19 is truly disturbing. It looks like a zombie. How did that ever make it through?

Liberty is too angel-like is some, coinage should be secular with no religious connotations even though we allow IN GOD WE TRUST.

Glad I won't be buying this coin this year. Back to the drawing board. I hope the CCAC rejects all of them. Is that possible?

It is safe to assume the 2009 UHR is safe from competition from this year's UHR.

They should have used some designs from the 2015 Platinum Proof this year. I may be buying that one though.

Many disasters, some nice ones.

I keep coming back to this obverse as my favorite, although as sketches, none of them jump out to me as a coin I must have. I have two big problems with this one, however. First is the choice of font, which is far too clunky for the elegant design, and continues the wretched practice of using an unattractive computer font rather than hand-crafting the legends. Second is the fact that the field is totally blank. If this is supposed to be an ultra-high relief design, put something in the background that gives a context to Liberty's walk toward the viewer other than empty space. Using a giant font for LIBERTY doesn't count.

This would go well with my chosen obverse. Same complaints about computer font and dead background. Move some of the legends to the edge and use the extra space artistically.

Winning reverse #1 & 10.

Don't know which will be the gold and which will be the silver, if indeed the Mint does go with these..

My thoughts exactly. What a shame. Such a great opportunity - an other high relief design - wasted. It seems as thought they're doing this just to do it. With the UHR there was a purpose - and a great idea. Here the idea is without direction or purpose. I so wish the they'd do something like a 1.5 oz UHR so that the design could be better appreciated, esp. with the $75 denomination. Another great idea, as many have mentioined for a larger gold coin would be a Pan Pac remake. It looks like I'll be able to save a few bucks as well on this one. I will have to reserve final judgement though as some of the designs do look nice if not lacking in purpose.

Agreed. I'd pick O-08 only because I like Liberty's hair.

Otherwise, I can't imagine what any of these would look like in high relief.

Should they pick a PC design, I'm in for a few more shares of DIS. I see a couple more billion dollar movies coming...

Maybe we'll get a Pan Pac $50 reissue in 2018 for the 103rd anniversary of the Pan Pac expo. That'd make sense.

Not my first choices but I respect their courage to "propose" something different. Without going political on this i think we know which one will win between the 2 obverses. i'm a buyer either way.

The mint should focus all high relief efforts towards commemorating earlier US coinage. The UHR is a great example. A HR uncirc. gold buffalo would be great.

I would have been VERY interested if obverse 12 was picked. Those 2? Not so much.
