Just saw a note on the dealer network that Jay CLine passed away Jan. 8. No details.
Professional Numismatist, Retired. 55 year member ANA. Former ANA Senior Authenticator. Winner of four ANA Heath Literary Awards; three Wayte and Olga Raymond Literary Awards; Numismatist of the Year Award 2009, and ANA Lifetime Achievement Award 2020. Winner of the PNG's 2026 Robert Friedberg Award for "The Enigmatic Lincoln Cents of 1922," Available now from Whitman or Amazon.

    That is sad news indeed. I haven't collected Standing Liberty quarters for a couple of decades now, but I remember him as the go-to guy for that series. His smiling face, neatly trimmed beard, and derby hat were a common sight on many bourse floors. He will be sadly missed. My condolences to his family.

    I dealt with Jay for nearly 30 years both buying & selling and we'd joke around at every show.

    I asked him last year after 50 years in the biz if he still enjoyed hitting the road to do shows and he said he still loved every minute.

    Really a huge hit for anyone working on the series as you could amass the SLQ's of every other dealer on the brouse floor and still not duplicate the inventory in Jay's cases.

    Several years ago I had an opportunity to meet Mr. Cline and his staff at Long Beach. Although I was just spending a few hundred on a Type coin and had a friend dropping about half that, Jay took extensive time to educate both of us on many SLQ attributes and was genuinely interested in both of us as collectors.

    I am saddened and hope his family realizes how much he gave in so many ways. A gentleman and a lost talent in our hobby.

    I'm shocked. He was THE dealer for SLQs, as nobody else even came close. His inventory was massive and representative of almost every issue at all times and in PQ condition. A HUGE loss to the SLQ collecting community. Very sad. image

    Just saw this posted, called a friend who is a good customer of Jay's and told him, he was sorry to here that.

    I am not a huge slq fan, but this same friend. Him and I about 3 years ago were attending Baltimore, I saw a really nice 16 SLQ in 58. Was about to purchase it went a nice 63FH caught my attention. it was quite expensive , some 7k more than the 58. I told my self If I didn't buy the 63, then I would regret it, even though I would have been happy with the 58. So I got my friend to buy the 58 and I bought the 63fh.

    Funny thing is my friend is a worth 100x more than I am, and this was the first time he ever spent more than 10k on a coin.

    Sad news. Jay had a coin shop in Dayton Ohio for years. Used to attend his once-a-month coin auction he held in Englewood. Because of other commitments I hadn't been for a few years. Miss his coin stories!

    Sad news indeed. I heard he missed FUN for an illness but no idea it was severe. I have had a table next to him at Baltimore for several shows. Always very nice to chat with at the show.

    I am sorry to hear about his passing. When I was just getting started in the business he let me take some things on consignment which was a very gracious thing for a dealer to do for someone he did not know well.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    I'm sorry to hear of Jay's passing. My condolences to his family. I purchased this coin, a 1918-P in PCGS MS65FH, from him at the 2003 FUN show.
