1851-O $5 Gold - Variety 1 or 2 Scarcity/Premium
I have seen from the notes that there were two varieties for this date and Variety 2 is the scarcest of the two. Is there any way to know how many variety 2s exist? Given that there are only 100-125 surviving coins it has to be less than 60, but I am curious if we are talking 3 or 30. Do many collectors look for the varieties or put a premium on these more "minor" varieties? Thanks

As far as I know, there really isn't really a market for minor varieties of gold coins.

I agree. In other words, people who care about the distinction are far, far rarer than the variety itself.
I also agree, and think that this is true for most series of coins, except early-date large cents.
