Yes, I finally bought the coin that I intended to purchase at the 2011 ANA. For that reason, I do not know if I get retroactive credit (and therefore this purchase does not count as a 2015 purchase) or I should consider it to be a 2015 FUN purchase. I will let you decide...
Back in 2011, I was still a collector in his glory, regularly adding coins to my collection, writing copy for dealers' websites, traveling to shows, reading coin books, getting mustard on my Hawaiian shirts, etc. You get the idea.
Prior to my traveling to the 2011 ANA show in Chicago (er, Rosemont), Doug Winter had already screened the Bowers and Merena auction lots and offered to bid for me. Knowing that I would also have the ability to view the lots in person, I held him off. There were a couple of pretty big dated gold collections up for sale, including the Rajj collection, and the one coin that I liked the most was Lot 9397. This is where my recollection of events gets a bit fuzzy.
I think that I thought Doug was bidding on the coin for me, and, as it turns out, he thought otherwise, so I ended up not buying the coin in the sale, despite that I was willing to pay more than the final price for this extremely colorful and interesting piece. I remember making a vain effort at the time to find out where the coin landed, and for at least a year, I scoured the usual outlets for an 1847-D $5 for sale, even considering the possibility that it was in a different holder and/or with a different grade.
Eventually, I moved on. In fact, I moved on so much that I hardly even collect coins any longer, but for some reason, I was perusing the Heritage 2015 FUN sale, and while looking at a completely different lot (different series, mint, denomination, etc.), in the corner of my eye, at the edge of the screen, in the "People that viewed this item also viewed:" section, I see a very vibrantly toned gold coin that piqued my interest. I clicked on the thumbnail, and, voila, the 1847-D $5 that slipped away 3 1/2 years ago! Naturally, my 2011 collecting spirit was rekindled, I bid aggressively, off-increment of course (!) and landed the coin at my max bid (and for about what I was planning to pay earlier).
So, now I present my 2011 ANA newps:
What I did not know in 2011 is that the 1847-D $5 was also from the Einstein Collection (Harry, not Albert), a collection that featured other colorful gold coins including my 1852-C quarter eagle, pictured below.

That was a fun (no pun intended) story. More seriously, I believe you have sold some of your coins. Do you think that if you had purchased the coin in 2011 you would still have it?

Absolutely!
Very nice newps you have there and it appears the bug has surfaced again and it seems that is a good thing at least for us.

The coin reminded me of the Littlejohn-RYK-Boosi 1848-C $5 with the same outstanding color.
