PCGS price guide price is $200,000 in PR64, no other prices for lower grades.

If I was RICK and had $80,000 wrapped up in a coin I wouldn't want it on TV showing everyone what I paid for it but maybe Rick already sold it?

In that case I,,,,, as the new owner selling it would not want that price known either.

And people thought the "I was slabbed in a hotel room late at night by overtired graders" label was special [ANA Gold Kennedy]!

The guy won it in a poker game. Yeah, sure.

Wanted $20K for it and then Rick told him it was worth a lot more. Um ... right. Within minutes on the Internet and anyone would know it's worth a lot more. Was this an attempt to make Rick seem like an honorable guy?

Called an expert to verify the NGC certified coin. Was he afraid it was in a counterfeit holder?

His "buddy" shows up and it's David Vagi ... WTH? Don't get me wrong, David is great with ancients (and an all-around bright guy), but why him as the "expert" for a modern coin?

Come on, guys ... make the segment at least somewhat believable! (yeah, I know it's scripted ... but get better writers!)

It looked harshly cleaned. I don't think I would spend that kind of money on a cleaned coin. They never really bought that coin- it's just a show. They even advertise for people with unique items to be on the show.

The star of the a popular History Channel show added a touch of celebrity to Heritage's Jan. 7 Platinum Night auction at the Florida United Numismatists show in Orlando.

Rick Harrison of Pawn Stars fame could be spotted at the midpoint of the auction as he watched a Proof 1922 Peace, High Relief dollar that crossed the counter at his shop bring just shy of $100,000, selling for $99,875.

The piece appeared in a Dec. 23, 2014, episode of the series. Numismatic Guaranty Corp. grader David Vagi assisted Harrison in the segment, quoting the value as “something north of 50, but less than a 100 [thousand].”

The man who sold the coin originally won it in a poker game. He thought that the coin’s value was around $20,000 and sold the coin to Harrison for $80,000.

The lot description cites researcher Roger Burdette’s estimate that around five to 10 Proof 1922 Peace, High Relief dollars were produced with a “Sandblast” Finish and these have two diagnostics. Specifically, “All obverses have the point of the bust sharply [overlying] the 9 in the date. The reverses all have a small defect in the area between the eagle’s talon and the leg and the olive branch; the rays are rounded.”

The 1922 Peace dollar features a relief similar to that found on the 1921 Peace dollars, and was struck during the Philadelphia Mint’s continuing experiments on the coin. The relief was reduced on circulation strikes starting in 1922.

The coin is housed in an NGC holder reading “Gold and Silver Pawn” and “On Air Collection.”

Rick sat right behind me in the Heritage auction room and so much filming was done was done of him and me!

I did not even know who he was and then they asked me to sign a waiver. I did not even know what they were talking about!

Then they took pictures of me holding a casting sheet.

I was hooked and felt like a star! LOL.

Then Rick and I took a selfie and he was really OK that I did not even know who he was!!

If anyone wants to see the pics, I will post them here!

Apparently the filming will be used for a future episode of his show.

Pawn Stars is not technically "scripted". But the sellers featured on the show aren't people who just walk in off the street. You have to apply and your item approved to be featured. It has to be that way. Otherwise, the cameraman, sound guy, and producer would have to be around the shop all time to catch the rare instance when someone comes in with something interesting enough to put on TV.

I suspect that some of the interactions between Rick, the Old Man, Corey, and Chum are instigated by the producer. But again, that's all ad-lib. There's no "script".

The proof Peace dollar net profit was probably a smaller percentage than usual for them, and since they each get over $40K per episode, Rick has one of the better gold mines out there. And now his old man is getting his silver stash certified by NGC and sold at a premium.

What I want to know is how much was in the pot at the poker game where the seller won the coin?

Was it a high stakes poker game where everyone around the table was placing 5 figure bets (and they knew the coin had a value in the 5 figures)?

Or was it a low stakes poker game where the person who bet with the 1922 dollar did not know its true value and thought it was worth $50.00?

I’ve been there before and the doors are closed and bouncers are at the doors so no one comes in to do business. The line forms outside and when they are done taping they let the mass of people in and everyone buys the over-priced trinkets for sale. It’s a circus. I was fortunate, there were about 200 people in line, I walked up and said hello to the bouncer and opened the door and walked right in. They were just finishing up taping. I took some pictures and someone yelled no pictures. The only one left was Chumley. Got to meet him, have photos and autographs and then I purchased a few things and left. Then I went over to Fish Tank and they were just starting to tape and met everyone, had pictures and they all signed a cap I purchased. It was a fun morning.

I have heard multiple stories of these guys... not very friendly off the set. Just entitled buttheads.

Another friend was a star in a trailer park reality show. They wanted my wife to sit in the higher end salon and run down the trailer park salon and tenants while she got her hair done. She was too shy, so another of his friends sat in who had local stage-play actress experience... all staged with script.

My wife's big shot... what could have been.

Thanks for sharing. Having been an extra on the TV show Hawaii Five-0 I always find it of interest to hear the behind the scenes experiences of others as well.

It is always a matter of luck as to whether you get to interact with the main actors. In my case I got slotted into a scene that led to a person to person encounter with the two main Task Force members McGarrett and Dano that included an off the screen conversation between takes. Suffice it to say both were most gracious to those of us in lessor roles.
