Of course it should. Why wouldn't it be?

Why is this even a question?

If it has putty and it's in a graded slab, someone's paying up, and it had better be the third-party grader.

Yes. The answer should be obvious although I felt the same way about copper changing color within the slab.

We pay for them to look at the coin if they can see rub they should be able to see putty or any other foreign substance on the surface.

    just disappointment for all.

I recalled recently reading the environmental damage section not too long ago and recall it including putty in the list. I hadn't posted about it until now. I check today and it is not in there.

Should be under "Altered Surfaces". Also, be advised that the use of the term "putty" is a generic for a broad range of chemical compounds that coat the surface of a coin and thus obscure problems. No one has used "Bondo" since 1988, though epoxied pseudo-DMPL's were quite the thing for a while.

In other late-breaking news, acetone will NOT set off the Sniffer.

I think the majority would say yes.

My opinion is a warranty backing the grade on the slab to be correct should be an absolute, if the coin was incorrectly graded because of putty and PVC it is their liability. If a coin changes in the holder then PCGS should have an Insurance policy for their insurance policy. What happens when there is a glut of crap coins in inaccurate holders on the market, all coins lose ground.

Ill never know how the TPG's backed out of their paid for protection coverages across the board with no concessions or grandfathering. If it had been vehicle manufacturers doing this there would have been so many class action lawsuits people heads would have spun. I almost think because of the more imbedded relationship between the dealers and TPGs (IE they are more or less the main customers but not the end holders of said services), that the services were sheltered form outrage from the end consumer who don't use them that much and the dealers are empowered to play the "Talk to XXXX" game. Dealers were always held to a higher standard for claims so the change is minimal for them with no reason to protest while customers are more or less left clueless until they get a bad coin. I just don't know what the mission statement of creating a sight unseen market means now that you can have a slug in a XXXX holder with no salvation, How is it different then buying raw?

My experience is that one major TPG removes the putty at no charge and pays the shipping. The other removes it but charges for grade review, order processing, and shipping.

I agree. It's disappointing not to have that coverage anymore.

I bought a half dollar at FUN from a reputable dealer. I saw it had more than a few spots of PVC. The dealer gave me a price break, which made it a little easier to stomach the fee I had to pay for its removal.

    Should should should

    Hmmmm

It's a bad idea to cover it if the "puttier" submits it back for coverage.

And I guess lack of coverage wouldn't reduce them to non-humans.

Cover it with putty--what a great idea and why didn't think of that.

If the grading guarantee does not cover "putty" then it is not worth much since that is one of the most dangerous deceptive acts that coin doctors can perpetrate. The grading services really need to find ways to detect and clamp down on "putty." This also applies to laser enhancement.

It's just another example of inflation i.e. getting less for your money.

As a member of the ICTA, let me just say that there's good news on the horizon regarding the HPA.

I'd release that information, but I think others might wish to research it themselves. It puts some TEETH in the ACT.
