You vs. ANACS - Chopmarked Trade Dollar (Grade Posted)

KyleKyle Posts: 1,822 ✭✭✭✭✭
This isn't my coin, but I thought it would make for an interesting GTG.

I don't mind one or two chopmarks on a trade dollar... This is a little extreme.

Maybe the shipped docked and the entire crew went to the local house of ill repute?

I think ANACS net graded it much lower than the actual detail remaining on the coin, due to the damage.

NO GRADE BODY BAGGED..........I remember when all Trade dollars with any chopmark was crap. Now, the level of crap has a new bar.
  • Boy that is a real mess, can a coin with that much damage/graffiti/test marks/chops even be graded?

I think it's interesting that almost all the chops are on the obverse.

AU to start with. Slim chance that it's a DDR. Would like to see closeups of the SW quadrant.

Grade by the luster and details in the unchopped areas. AU50 details, thoroughly chopmarked. Some people rather like trade dollars that are somewhat obliterated like this.

A little too choppy to grade, IMO. But that's not a bad thing. image

I don't see how they can authenticate it as real....

I see "pimples" in places there should not be any. Like the reverse between S and O. Like on the rim above the F in OF.

Chopmarked coins shouldn't be graded or marked genuine since the chopmarks would be very easy to fake. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the original punches for the chopmarks still exist in China.

Personally, I would not buy or sell a chopmarked coin.

Xf details, and chopmarks are about as easy to fake as MM, dates or anything else in our hobby.

I just bought my first chop marked T$1 for my Varieties Showcase. Will only own one but I think they are kind of cool (well some of them are, some are mutilated, and some are boring). My son is learning Mandarin Chinese and he/I are doing a little research project into the source of the Chopmarks on this coin, etc. A little fun historical project...

They definitely got the "Heavily Chopmarked" part right. As for the grade, you don't want to give a coin
"AU Details" when most of the details have been obliterated. Fine Details sounds about right.

    MDG:

I used to own that Trade Dollar! I liked it a lot and as you can see it has some really cool chops. I was loathe to sell, but I needed to make room to buy more. I am glad you like it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but grading genuine doesn't necessarily mean the chopmarks, graffiti, cleaning, toning, etc. is authentic/of the period, but just that the coin is genuine.

I don't know what the TPGs policy is on this issue. They should enlighten us.

The TPG's would be grading the coin as genuine, not the chopmarks.

that is a great example with very interesting chops.

yeah, and it has one of the cartouche style chops on the reverse as well. Ex-DDR, too!

Grade is kind of irrelevant on the subject coin

There are so many chop marks on that piece that it is almost impossible to grade it. Going by the surfaces, I'd say that it was probably an EF-AU coin before it got all of those Asian "tattoos." It is an interesting conversation piece, but that's about it.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

And at about $100s that is what it is sold at as a curiosity. The holder is just to make people feel secure that it isn't some modern pot metal knockoff.

DDR, I am glad I was lucky enough to stumble upon to it. I was in Lihuania when I found it, and it was like 1 AM, but I couldn't go to sleep until I did the deal. Last week I sent it to CAC and it now has a green CAC sticker...

MDG, not to rain on your parade, and this is just my opinion, but I do not believe the chopmark on EPB banner is genuine. The others are toned over so it is difficult to say. The coin is genuine, however.
