Post the ugliest toned coin you've ever SEEN!! Fun topic!!

I deal in nicely toned coins. However, I have seen a lot of ugly ones, too. Here is a Silver Eagle in the terminal stages of toning and would be considered Environmental Damage if sent to our host. The coin has a few untoned blotches for whatever reason. The eagle's tail on the reverse is not untoned but is a robin's egg blue which is one of the earlier colors in the spectrum. It quickly progresses to cycle 3 deeper greens in the shield and around the eagle's head. Otherwise the rest is black a "z" on the Sunnywood scale; even crusty black in a few places. Luster is barely visible. The date is barely readible; it is 1998. I figured this might be a fun topic.

Hey man whatever floats your boat. I don't really have any ugly toners, but I do have some dark toners. Here's one from France.

Sorry, Slammer. You didn't even qualify. That Columbian half isn't ugly at all. It's not gorgeous, either, but I like it just fine. Not bad, and even mildly appealing.

The ASE in the OP definitely gets the CAC (Coins Approaching Crap) "black bean" sticker.

No pix, but I saw a classic commem inside a PCGS MS65 OGH once that had dishwater toning and an enormous soot-black thumbprint smack dab in the center of the obverse. You could see the ridge detail and law enforcement could've ID-ed the perp from it, if he wasn't long dead.

It was in a B&M dealer's case. Ever see something so ugly that you blurt out a reaction without even thinking? That happened to me then. I stupidly made some statement of revulsion, and the dealer professed to see nothing wrong at all. A decade later that coin's hideousness haunts me, and I still remember it.

I love your color commentary. I literally image when you said, "Ever see something so ugly that you blurt out a reaction "

No comments about my French piece. I guess it really is oooogelay. Gee thanks. Fun thread image

Nessie, your French piece doesn't qualify for the sweepstakes, either, and has a cool design, too, so no black bean for you, either.

C'mon, people. The man said UGLY toning. I know y'all are up to the challenge.

Let me scan some of the impaired Caribbean proofs I found in a Darkside bulk bag and I can play here.

They're gorgeous... on one side. Epic packaging fail involving some kind of foam rubbery insert in the cases. Some people will know what I'm talking about.

Hmm. That Merc is ugly ... and pretty. So pretty it's ugly, or vice versa. Something like that.

It's wild. But I do think if that's the "ugliest toned coin you've ever seen", you ain't been out much. image

I consider most tarnish ugly. Once in a while something unique occurs (like tarnish resembling a sunset on an Oregon commem) that is interesting. I just do not like tarnish, since it is, after all....environmental damage to the coin's surface. Cheers, RickO

    NOW we're talkin'!

Definitely a black bean for the Morgan, and some if not most of Teddy's treasures, there.

The medieval that TopographicOceans posted doesn't even remotely qualify as having bad toning- it's actually got rather nice toning.

The bucktoothed lookin' portrait is hilarious, though. image

PS- if you're gonna portray the Savior on a coin, wouldn't it be good if you refrained from making Him look like something out of a Mr. Bill or Wallace & Gromit claymation cartoon?

One wonders if St. Peter didn't take that die engraver aside for a quick, private chat before they let him through the Pearly Gates.

(I like how he engraved the toes, too. Have seen some crazy portraiture on medieval coins before, but that one's a laff riot.)

I had this 1796 half dime in my collection for a while to cover the "LIKERTY" hole in my set. It was improperly dipped and toned to look like this. My sharpness grade is VF. PCGS, I believe, net graded it to Fine-15. I called it "my leopard coin" when it was in my collection.

SeattleSlammer - that is actually pretty toning, especially for a Columbian; Columbians can come ugly!

LochNESS - Copper that has oxidized to brown is considered toning. That is a nice, even brown. Quite wholesome, actually!

    lordmarcoven - lol as usual

TopographicOceans - Barber Half looks to be ugliest of that bunch.

lostincoins - excellent toned Merc actually; color adjustment looks way off.

ChangeInHistory - yes, some of these mint set toners come ugly. I can see some beauty in this piece, but ugliness prevails.

SoCalBigMark - mostly ugly, some beauty.

TopographicOceans - that ancient looks pretty neutral to me.

Type2 - one of the worst funny AT jobs I have ever seen ; I'm thinking I've seen that one before somewhere.

lasvegasteddy - that Boone is the worst toned Boone I have seen

TwoSides2aCoin - mostly ugly with only some beauty in those album toned Silver Roosies. I can remember coming across a few folders that would contain a cache of coins that look like that. Not all album toning is created equal.

OKbustchaser - that Bust Half approaches my Silver Eagle for terminal crustiness. The 1829 not as much. Unfortunate toning patch does limit that one in eye appeal department.

lasvegasteddy - 3 Silver Washies are pretty. . .pretty ugly. And the proof Cent you have posted after these is part of my inspiration for starting this thread. I recently saw that one somewhere and thought it was the furriest modern proof I have ever seen. Probably water damage caused that.

BillJones - quite unfortunate for that early Half Dime.

WingedLiberty1957 - of all the pretty 1970 proof Cents this one looks different in a good and bad way. I can see that one going either way for AT/NT. Attractive piece regardless, I believe.

JerseyJoe - I like the obverse. Horse on reverse dipped in coffee! I do not like my coffee equestrian, sorry.

crazyhounddog - shades of beauty and ugliness. Colorful toning; terrible haze. The line between haze and toning can often be. . .hazy.

The 3 worst ones that surpass even my Silver Eagle in ugliness that were posted in this thread so far that stick out to me: the laughable AT Morgan posted by Type2, the Boone posted by lasvegasteddy, and the furry proof cent (1984?) also posted by lasvegasteddy.

As in, here is a dark toned coin which I do not consider ugly. Just dark. So … … I guess that means we agree.
