How far back do you need to document any cash that you might have with you? How long a pedigree? Should the bank be certifying the serial number of every piece of currency that they hand out to you in some sort of receipt? Seems like that's the best solution for bank customers who deal in any significant amount of cash. >>
These days, it's not only important to avoid actual wrongdoing, it's important to avoid even the appearance of wrongdoing.
So someone might be as innocent as a newborn babe, but if they're moving a lot of cash around (or trying to buy an inordinate amount of fuel oil and fertilizer, or searching the internet about how to get rid of a corpse, or have chemical smells coming from their home and a stream of 5 minute visitors at all hours), then they'd better be prepared to answer some questions and able to prove the answers, when the police ask.
