    Here is the latest addition to my humble but steadily growing Dansco album. While I've only recently dipped my toes into the Seated waters, I've found the Dansco album to be a very enjoyable endeavor. Nothing special about this date, but Id take an album full of coins with a similar look:

    Here's a stunning gem mint state 1853 seated dollar. It appears to be a very early strike off this obverse die, showing different patches of fine die polish lines in great details, which give the interesting property that the different patches light up at different angles under a light source. It actually took me a few minutes to figure out what I what seeing, the effect is so unusual and pristine. Interestingly, this is not one of the trio of Choice/Gem 1853 dollars that were famously offered in the Fairfield Collection. I have not found any auction provenance for this coin.

    Thanks JG ... you can see what I mean even in the image ... for example, the obverse right field looks grey and muted in the image, but if you tilt the coin just a bit further, then that part lights up too ... and then if you tilt a tad further than that, the left side goes out and the right side stays lit. It appears the die surface was polished in patches, and the result is that the different patches are not exactly co-planar on the die surface. Also each patch has die polish lines in a different direction from other patches (one patch is around Miss Liberty's head, with horizontal striations ... if you tile the coin just right, you can get ONLY that patch to light up!). Anyway it is a very original, very cool coin !!

    Doug, I just gave up an 88 in F-12. It had a little less obverse rims than yours. I almost had a score for the album. Yours has a better look. Congrats on a good find. It's easier to find an MS than a fine I believe.

    Die break? I'm not seeing it. There is a ding off Liberty's left shoulder and a reverse mark through the scroll. Mine is 1-B with some reverse die clash. Doug's looks to be 4-D witht he extra '8' in the denticles, per Briggs/McCloskey.
