    Nice - I just bought one of these at a show two weeks ago - couldn't pass it up, as it was old, gold, and inexpensive.
    I think these and the $5 versions are a good bargain - at least the common dates/varieties.

    100% Agreed - and I'm not usually the type to buy philly minted coins. I can't help not passing up crusty old gold. image

    I like these coins, and they have grabbed my interest since I found out about them in the mid 1960s when I was in high school. These were the first gold coins that were really used for general circulation. They were part of Andrew Jackson's campaign to bring economic stability to the working classes by issuing large numbers of low denomination gold coins.

    I am hoping to receive an 1839-O in a few days.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Nothing, but the branch mint coins are sexier because of the obverse mint marks.

    Nothing wrong, especially for dirty old gold, then no mint can go wrong. I just prefer southern branch mints for most of my coins. image

    Yes those mint mark on obverse pieces are super cool.
    I saw a few of those at the same show, but the examples available looked very scrubbed (and were
    still holdered) and QUITE a bit more money.

    The 1839-D $2.50 I posted here has been scrubbed a little, but the price was right so I bought it. Tiny increases in quality or even perceived increases in quality for these coins can increase the price mightily. I passed on other 1839-D quarter eagles that were priced at more than twice what I paid for that one, that I didn't like as well. I've only seen a couple that I REALLY liked, but circumstances precluded me purchasing one, and the other was maxed on the price.

    Love that design! Great pick up and XF45 is the perfect grade for both grit and detail.

    Also, talking about the cool branch mint coins. I sold this one and really miss it, but at the time had to move it!
