Does it carry a significant premium or, due to the big size, the premium is kept low to facilitate the sale?
Just curious, no need to disclose the premium, obviously.

Super cool. Could be a one of a kind bar being that allengelhard.com doesn't even have that size (oz's) available in their search. What have you done to ensure it's genuine, if anything.
This is an example where I would send it in for certification if a TPG offered such services.

Did you buy this bar from APMEX? They are currently out of stock for that particular bar. Apparently it was made during the 1960's per their description.

I remember saw that bar on Apmex as well. Pretty healthy premium for such a large bar.

A very cool bar indeed, it's the first I've seen in that denomination. Congrats!

Hi Captain. Here is your close up.

    image

    Nibanny & OPA

There was significant premium. OPA is correct and this bar came from Apmex.

FYI- Ampex worked with me on the price since the item literally has no history.

They had never seen this type of bar before not did anyone else I asked.

Tank you for the closeup. I have no question that it is real, but I have never seen a serial number like that. Amazing.

Capt, how can you be sure? Not presuming anything, just curious to know how an unique item can be identified as original/genuine. Thanks!

    Two points:

    1. I'm satisfied it is real and Engelhard. If I had the extra cash I would have purchased it.

    2. It is awesome.

    Nicely done MJ. image

Are the "5" of ".9995" and the "12" of "12 TR OZ." hand stamped as well as the "-49"?

Doesn't the apparent addition of serial numbers by hand interest anybody? My guess is that this bar was part of a special run and that this bar is number 49 of that batch. Any other ideas?

The gentleman that runs the Engelhard collector site says he has never seen another one of these.

That collector I had in Chicago who had over 3,800 ounces, all different, in his gold collection did not have one. I still have his two poured 10 ozers, so I know he would have bought a 12 had he ever seen one.

I strongly suspect that this is the sole survivor of a single production run.

If the collector with 3,800 ounces did not have a 12 oz gold piece it is indeed rare.

I have a handful of silver items where only one example is known but the 12 oz gold piece is in a class by itself.

Perhaps it's really a 1.2 oz bar with some filler.
