Why would a dealer want to control collectors' access to information.....even if they believe there is some misinformation? Which is the greater risk to the collector, censorship by someone with a commercial interest, or public "chatroom" discussions? In a "chatroom" misinformation is subject to peer scrutiny. Who would subject the censor's actions to scrutiny? This hot topics was ill-conceived and will likely offend potential customers if they understand how presumptuous it is.
Developing theory is what we are meant to do as academic researchers and it sets us apart from practitioners and consultants. Gregor

Yup. I'd say on 90% of the coins presented via a photograph the majority of people here can tell a bad coin from a good coin. And when it comes to untoned mint state Morgans and gold coins, it's pretty easy to bracket the grade with the only real issue not being able to see miniscule hairlines. I would agree that a lot of people have been educated here on grading coins. While even the best graders only get it right 65-85% of the time, it helps to have an abundance of opinions from both collectors and dealers alike. The forum almost always picks up on low end, over-graded and problem coins. I wish there was a forum like this back in the early 1970's when I was learning by making mistakes and losing money doing it.
Don Willis instituted rules here a few years back about dealer and member bashing. It has maintained a fair level of civility.

Way too much drama for me on some of these recent threads though and haven't read it all. For the most part, I like to keep a pretty low profile. I prefer not to share my name publicly though I've shared it with some friends I've met and entrusted here. I do not work in the business and am just a collector.
As with the rest of the internet though, i understand that my username and email are easily tracked and only offer an illusion of anonymity and that everything I post will be out there forever. I prefer not to get my kicks sturring the kettle here.
Overall, I've learned much more than been scammed and scorned here!

Our Lady sure is vocal. OK in the internet age isn't that what we want out of people? We want to read their thoughts and opinions, and on that count, she delivers - with passion. So what if her spelling is a bit off . Have you seen the stuff on some of the general chat boards out there? Some of those people are just barely literate. Some sound like 6 or 7 year old children, and they may very well be that age. How many parents these days have given their toddlers iPads and such?
Even if our Lady doesnt actually post here with us we can still read what shes thinking, over on her chat forum ( actually its more like her own private soap box - but its all good ). I enjoy reading what Laura Sperber has to say. She puts a hot spark into an otherwise dull and nerdy hobby.
Keep it up Laura, everything you're bringing is real, relevant, and exciting.
I do have one complaint about Legend Numismatics though. Their stuff is a tad on the high side. And given that you can't get a true judgment on a Coin based on a photograph, I'm a bit reluctant to buy things at that level. Not trying to say Legend is my comfort zone but given my recently increased income level, I'm about to do a big one, soon.

My very first purchase from them was a 5-figure coin that they sent to me on approval. Not saying they'll do that with you, but you should call them and I'm 110% they'll try to work with you.
A few points that no one could probably get me to back off on.
Laura is passionate about coins. It defines her.
Laura lives for coins.
Laura hates cheats.
Laura makes me cringe at times but I've had the same said about me.
Laura's manner can more cave side then bed side but she is consistent. I actually find her very sweet
No one cares if you choose not to do business with Legend. Personally, all my deals Legend have been seamless and pleasant. Some forget that you get George in the deal as well. He is SO underrated in this industry. Great eye.
PCGS has thinly veiled their intent to perhaps close this chatroom one day.
Don has personally stated he has no problems with Laura's rants and misspellings.
The fact that Laura still causes so many panties to twist and wad up around here is a true testament to lycra.
Some of you have way too much time on your hands and I suggest looking into thicker skin.

I personally have a great deal of respect for Laura, her firm and their respective accomplishments in the business and hobby. That said, I feel that Laura's mercurial temperament can work against her insofar as public perception... and though I obviously have no way to prove this conclusively, I have little doubt that it has likely cost her firm at least some business over time. Of course it could be said that the business lost is probably negligible in the larger scope of Legend's universe... but regardless, a cavalier "let Laura be Laura" attitude doesn't seem apropos, especially given that she is now a representative of ANA and a de facto ambassador for the hobby.

Do you suppose it's possible the people who voted for her were under the impression that if she was elected, her approach to doing things would change?
Perhaps the ANA should have a chatroom on it's website. Then Ms. Sperber, as an ANA Governor, could dictate how it is operated as opposed to dictating how other businesses should operate theirs.

Are you stating Legend spends 10's of thousands with CLCT every month on advertising? That would infer 100's of thousands/month in ad dollars. I am skeptical. Can you point me to that line on the income statement for CLCT?
Yes, Legend spends six figures per year with PCGS on advertising. I find it rather naive to suggest a major advertiser should have zero control or input on content. The referenced post completely missed the mark IMO.

That's new info to me. I change my mind. She can say whatever she wants. Shareholders thank her.
That would also imply that CLCT gets over $1M/yr in advertising from all those that pay for advertising. Maybe they just aggregate it in the coin/card businesses on the income statement.
While I disagree that advertisers should have control of the content where they advertise, they certainly have control of where they want there name to be, and if they do not like the content where there name is being advertised, simply stop advertising there.
