Nah, I don't read her Hot Topics anymore - just her Market Reports. But I can certainly say that Author1's posts in both threads show cause for what I garner to be the gist of her column. Once you (Legend) and Laura overwhelmingly win that lawsuit, you should see if someplace like Wired is interested in their story and questions raised about the approach their business model takes in situations like yours and hers, and how it was too easy for it to have happen.
Last, its been forever and people still try and grade from images. No one ever will be able too. Only on a chatroom is the ridiculous is demanded and accepted.

I think that Laura lacks the capacity to understand that this is NOT a black and white world which we live in and there are a lot of "different" grey areas which require rational discussion with the key being "rational discussion". It simply is not rational thinking to believe that PCGS and NGC should close their coin forums based upon one persons "opinion".
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I, for one, would miss the grading threads if they were gone!
More often than not, the group consensus is actually fairly accurate, calling into question her whole problem with them. And the discussions they generate are always enlightening...both for the good and bad information elicited.
And I'm not sure that even one goes by without SOMEONE pointing out that the pictures could make the coin look better, or worse, than reality.
All in all, I think the good far outweighs the bad.

At least this time the rant does represent a variation on the theme. It isn't the chat room weenies, over-hyped moderns, coin doctors, wannabe dealers, the ANA, the PNG, the failure of the TPGs, or the set registries. This time the threat is more serious. It comes from our midst! What a miserable hobby. I think today must be a code orange.

Easily solved by Bochiman's questions. I'm curious to hear the answers.
I would depend on her eyes before mine and her people before mine. No question about that. The higher up coins go in the hobby, the more business drives industry, and the sooner they (mainstream) begin to see what's left to pick from and on, let alone pick out and apart. How could anyone miss this in the coin world ?
In my 5th year on the street and anyone who subscribes to any publication whether CW, Numis this or that, Grey Sheet, … Heritage or elsewhere can see the uplift many coins got with an approval service like the CAC. So this stands to reason and passes the test.
Even as the economy burps, top shelf rare coins hold their ground and the cream usually rises to the top, There's not a lot to argue there. Ego perhaps.
Misinformation, bad advice, coin bashing, dealer bashing, wannabes burying clueless newbs in bad coins. Laura is right, it can all be found here. But as others have said it can be found as well at coin shows, in coin shops, and even on dealer websites. At least here, at least sometimes, a knowledgeable person will speak up to set the record straight for those here who have figured out which posters know coins.
People hiding behind forum handles? The funny thing is that many of the best contributors to the forum do use handles but everyone knows who they are. If you have not figured out who TDN, EagleEye, Njcoincrank, Coloneljessup, and MrEureka are you are lost. There are others here whose names are known. Many seem like nice people. Some not so nice. If you knew the names of most of the rest of us it would be meaningless. Perhaps it is best that most folks here use handles, as it should be a red flag not to rely on advice posted on an internet forum by faceless, nameless strangers.
The sad thing is that when Laura did post here she wasted her time and energy fighting with people and ranting against a few marginal forum figures instead of posting educational threads. Commentary on things such as auction results, and why some cons sold strong while others did not, what sets some coins apart from others etc would have been very well received. But it seldom happened.
On another note, one ominous statement posted in this thread seems to have been overlooked in the typical cacophony that erupts here when Laura speaks her mind.
<< <i>Laura is not just complaining-I believe she knows that PCGS is working on changing many of the problems this forum has had, for years. >>
This comes from a member whose posts deal mostly with strategies for winning $40,000 coins at auction. Nice work if you can get it. But if that becomes the standard for the forum, it will soon be as moribund as the Registry forum.
<< <i>Laura's opinions would be more credible to me if she could write better and/or proofread her posts before posting them publicly. >>
I do respect her as a dealer and occasionally admire her strong opinions. However, I agree that taking a moment to proofread her comments before posting would help her image immensely.

Have you had direct interactions with her or Legend? Your account says 2013 for year joined. She stopped participating here prior to that.
Sounds like you should have no business telling her her business if you haven't had any interactions. She WAS a member here longer than YOU have been....just so ya know

I gave my opinion on an open forum. It's not a shot at her. If she isn't here on this forum interacting then why should she care what goes on?
I have met her at shows and had a nice discussion. Whether she was here before me means nothing. She is complaining about the present in which she does not partake in discussions here.
Her grammar is so embarrassingly poor, it is hard to take her seriously. Spell checking or proof reading would only clean up the pen that stems from her brain. She apparently has below middle school spelling and grammar.

Does that mean she cannot run a business, well, and do well for her clients? I am all for educated and clear communications, but get kind of tired when people so want to disparage someone that they focus on the same, mundane, things all the time. It would be one thing if she did a poor job at her job. It would then be another reason for that, potentially.
I don't think (and I have never purchased from Legend as it is above my pay grade for most items and the few I was going to do were already sold before I could get to them) that that is the case though. I think Laura is VERY successful and does her clients VERY well.
At that point, why do you (royal "you" as in anyone with the problem) care about her spelling or grammar? Particularly if it is not harming you as her client?
When she needs some lowly "I" dotter or "T" crosser, she can just have TDN called in to do it

I am sorry but many people including myself use the manner that one expresses him or herself as part of a way to judge a person's credibility and personality. We live in such an online world these days with so much written information to interpret. Maybe I care more than others but I seem to read into a person's character by what and how they write. I fully expect myself to be judged by others too. It is similar to that gut instinct you can get from looking a person in the eye or the feel of the handshake. Without a doubt I write mistakes and am far from perfect. But I am careful about how I write and what I say as once again, I feel it is a reflection of me.
I am too....I judge people by WHAT they write...not on how though.
Kind of like the stories about car dealers in Bellevue, Washington about 20 years ago. They liked to judge people by how they looked. They didn't want to even approach the younger, ill-dressed, folks coming in to look at expensive cars. Turns out, many of those folks were Microsoft employees...at a time when the stock was exploding and they were selling options left and right and had MILLIONS, and more coming.

For anyone regularly publishing his or her thoughts, lack of proficiency in English is hardly a "mundane thing". Furthermore, part of "her job" is apparently gracing us all with her wisdom, and yes, there's a lot of room for improvement there. If she wanted to just sell coins and make a lot of money in silence, I doubt anyone here would ever bring up the topic of her tortured linguistic "skills", but this tripe is regularly thrown in our faces.

Thrown in your faces? By whom? Not by her. She writes her blog and doesn't force anyone to go there. I sincerely doubt that she asks anyone to post links to it here. Seems to me that most people that are so up in arms of it here, go there on their own accord and know they will get themselves all riled up.
That's the hypocrisy I find so moronic and distasteful. To put all the blame on someone and their writing styles/capabilities and continually publically (anonymously by most) rail against them in a place where said person doesn't post while whining about that person posting something "railing against them" in a place they can't post. It's mob mentality here when it comes to Laura. I would love to know who here, that rails against her, has been harmed by her in any fashion, aside from getting their wittle bitty feelings hurt?
It's always fun to get the pitchforks out, over and over, about her writing style, right? She really comes right out there to invade all our houses, take us at gunpoint to our computers, and forces us to read her blog, right? I know that I will read some of them, when they are linked here, but I don't go there daily/weekly/monthly, nor do I read every blog she does linked here. When I am bored, yes. I have enough of a life not to worry about small things though.

Constantine, I agree with everything you have written. Laura has a good eye for quality coins and seems to be able to run a business, but loses all her credibility with me when she spells and writes like my the students my wife teaches in her fifth grade class (or worse). One if the things wrong with society today is that we have dumbed down acceptable standards. Laura should have a more educated person proofread her essays or dictate them. Proper use of the language is not mundane. On another note , I am tired of Laura trying to glorify her business by slamming other people. Hi,
You have a mistake in what you wrote. Maybe just spelling, but could be diction or (least likely, grammar) mistake.
Also, do you really agree that you can judge one's character based on his or her spelling and grammar? Or is that a mistake in diction?

I'm sorry, but I think coming onto an Internet message board about coins to slam one's writing skills speaks volumes about your negative character and personality. Btw, personality and character are not the same. What is your level of education?

EVP, You must be a big fan of Laura's. If any of us critical of her have made of "typo", it is minor compared to how she mangles the language. Our point is obvious. Grow up!

I'm trying to illustrate a point. Laura's writing mistakes may be egregious to you and some others, but where does one draw the line between what is "minor" and what is serious enough to slam publicly?
And, when is it ok to attack her not on the merits of her commentary? I get you may disagree with her points in her recent Hot Topics, but why rip her about her writing woes?
Does it make you feel more on point about her comments if you added the matter of her writing woes?
Please don't tell me to grow up -- I'm trying to make a sincere point.
I see this has devolved into nothing but a pissing contest over grammer. I would like to remind everyone that Don Willis himself previously has stated that if all you have to add is something negative about her spelling or grammer, then STFU.

So, to the original poster of the first part......please do refresh us on the man's name she used and if, in fact, it wasn't just a screen name but one she stayed under.....
To the secondary poster calling it hypocritical: There is a big difference between a screen name and hiding behind it versus using a screen name and being openly known by your real name/business. So, unless you know (because I admittedly don't know) whether she used a man's name, and hid behind it never saying who she really was, then it is disingenuous to call her hypocritical. True? >>
And it goes to my claim that many/most folks will believe what they read or hear without doing due diligence. >>
Easily solved by Bochiman's questions. I'm curious to hear the answers.

<< <i>Laura's opinions would be more credible to me if she could write better and/or proofread her posts before posting them publicly. >>
I do respect her as a dealer and occasionally admire her strong opinions. However, I agree that taking a moment to proofread her comments before posting would help her image immensely.
<< <i>Misinformation, bad advice, coin bashing, dealer bashing, wannabes burying clueless newbs in bad coins. Laura is right, it can all be found here. But as others have said it can be found as well at coin shows, in coin shops, and even on dealer websites. At least here, at least sometimes, a knowledgeable person will speak up to set the record straight for those here who have figured out which posters know coins.

I have NEVER known Laura to post under anything other than the id LEGEND which she still owns and could use since the id is not banned.

I gave my opinion on an open forum. It's not a shot at her. If she isn't here on this forum interacting then why should she care what goes on?
I have met her at shows and had a nice discussion. Whether she was here before me means nothing. She is complaining about the present in which she does not partake in discussions here.

<< <i>Her grammar is so embarrassingly poor, it is hard to take her seriously. >>

Furthermore, part of "her job" is apparently gracing us all with her wisdom, and yes, there's a lot of room
for improvement there. If she wanted to just sell coins and make a lot of money in silence, I doubt anyone
here would ever bring up the topic of her tortured linguistic "skills", but this tripe is regularly thrown in our

Constantine,
I agree with everything you have written.
Let your inventory speak for itself to those who can actually afford to purchase from it.

Hi,
You have a mistake in what you wrote. Maybe just spelling, but could be diction or (least likely, grammar) mistake.
Also, do you really agree that you can judge one's character based on his or her spelling and grammar? Or is that a mistake in diction?

EVP,
You must be a big fan of Laura's.
