Laura's opinions would be more credible to me if she could write better and/or proofread her posts before posting them publicly.

(And yes, this point is beating a dead horse!)

Laura seems to be one of the few that aren't interested in anonymity!

Because that would partially mean one would get less attention.

From her rant: "My solution is simple: make people be identified by their REAL names-and ONLY accept registrations that can be confirmed."

Boy, it is interesting that someone that has such a thin-skin finds it difficult to belong to an open forum - oh, that's right, she was booted.

    real names?

even if real names are used, I can cite examples where people provide misleading info to others to get them to feel sympathy towards their position.

How about dealing with real names and in person? I can point out one person from the previous sentence who went before a public entity during a hearing and grossly exaggerated a problem to them. Luckily, those public officals didn't buy it. My idea after that came from what I saw in another jurisdiction: swear people in with a threat of perjury. But can't we all think of times when there has been lying on the stand?

I may be one of those wise-fools -- those who have a little information and are dangerous because of it -- at times. The thing to do is to post about the errors and refute positions taken. This way everyone learns, not only about the subject, but also about the quality of info the person provides.

<===== Now accepting all flames, corrections, eye rolls, and "wow... clueless" comments publically. Don't reserve them for PM or inside your own head or no one will benefit.

    oh. I forgot.

    Educating the masses...

    will it ever be done?

as new people enter, they have incorrect info and ideas which must be educated away.

It's a never ending story. The way to deal with it is to just keep the corrections coming.

Seems to me that when misinformation appears on this forum, someone quickly sets things straight. That's good enough for me.

And as for anonymity, security considerations make Laura's proposal naive, at best.

Really Laura? You need to start by looking in the mirror. You are known for running your mouth at shows, not to mention tooting your own horn about your company, CAC and your Auction house. You may not be on the forums, but you do your own damage elsewhere. Any dealer that doesn't bow to CAC, you flame. So, get off your high horse.

Yes, before forums there was never misinformation...

For as much bad information, deceit there is here, there is probably at least 5x good information, support, etc. If over 60% of what she sees is inaccurate, she is looking pretty selectively.

But let's get nanny Sperber to clean things up!

Posting actual names is the ultimate double edged sword. On one hand I agree that it would prevent a significant amount of trolling out of here. However, it would create security risks that many on here are not equipped to handle. While I am open with who I am, being a professional I also know how to keep myself and my coins safe. Of course this is no guarantee as a former dealer who I am close with still got hit even being supremely cautious. Having your name out there related to coins is a huge security risk most average collectors are not equipped to deal with. As Realone has pointed out to me one time when I inadvertently outed him (and subsequently changed the post), it is a matter of personal choice whether or not to identify yourself and no one else should force it. I think we would lose far too many contributors who at least give decent information. I would hope people use their common sense and trust only people whose credentials can be confirmed. If you choose to trust unidentifiable strangers... well there is not a lot we can do for you. Whether it is here or elsewhere, the bad information will get to you. Ideally we would live in a world where we could require identification without consequence but that is not realistic. As with many things, the unintended consequences of cleaning things up would be far worse than what it is fixing.

Wow, she's creeping close to going over the edge with that rant.

First, there is only one forum police here... and she ain't it. If she wants to sponsor a chat room and set rules on ID's go for it. But don't pretend to tell other people how to run their business just because you would do it differently.

I understand there are many good reasons for confidentiality on the boards but none have ever applied to me. If you can't figure out my real name from my forum ID, there's not much I can do to help you.

<< <i>Hot Topics: Today on PCGS there is a threqad stating: "What dealers do not want you to know". Really? Is that needed? It creates unessecary dealer bashing and negavity. >>

I'm surprised by this. I didn't think the thread was that bad.

<< <i>Market Report: We feel it is critical to prove that there is huge money out there looking for places to go. The arguement that you can display a $75 million dollar painting but you can't display a coin does not work for us. These days, because iof substanital values you need heavy security to display anything. If you can display a painting worth so much, you can creat a secure display at home for a coin too. The coin market to date only has the Legend owned $1 1794 that cost $10,000,000.00 (plus another 3-4 coins that if sold would break that mark). >>

I think the issue is that more people can appreciate an art display than a coin display, not whether you can display it securely or not.

I propose that Legend start up a chatroom requiring participants to have their real names readily available. There's nothing stopping her from doing this.

As for the misinformation, what's seen here is probably no more misleading that what you can see and hear at a coin show. The difference is that here, it's much easier to get to the bottom of what's good information and what's not. If someone posts a rant about how dealers suck and only want to screw collectors, while there will be people taking the opportunity to pile one with their anecdotal evidence, there will be others handily refuting that assertion. A new collector that searches the forum years from now will see both sides of the story. If they overhear "Dealer XYZ is a crook" while waiting to spend $10 on a convention center hot dog, they won't get others' perspectives.

As for grading from pictures, she's right. You miss a lot by grading from a picture, but not everything. If grading from a picture were as dangerous as she says, then LM auctions should not post pics of their coins, but rather insist that for the protection of bidders, only coins seen in hand or by a representative should be bid on. That wouldn't go over very well, of course. She should also slap TDN on the wrist every time he responds to a GTG thread with a grade. Of course, for all I know she lets him have it upside the head with a shovel when he does that.

Chatrooms and forums do have some of the issues she mentions, but so does every other venue of information exchange. There's a ton of really good information here along with the noise, and much of that came from people whose names I don't know. I don't think you'd get as much of the good info that exists today if you stripped away people's anonymity. What might have been more productive on her part would have been rules for how to get the good information out of a forum.

Wow. I'm usually (mostly) OK with what she rites... ahem, writes, but this one is really "out there". Her credibility would be enhanced greatly by having someone proof-read what she's posting before going live with it.

    A. Internet forums don't have a monopoly on misinformation. In fact, my view is that this is one of the most useful places to find real opinions from real people who have real skin in the game. Are there idiots who post stupid things? Sure, but most people with a brain know how to sift through it. Is everything I post relevant or even accurate? Probably not. We're all at different levels. We're all learning. Most of us are actually trying to be helpful and as smart as we can in a complicated hobby. Some of the most helpful people in the world post here regularly. Do I have incorrect stuff floating around in my head that I picked up here? Maybe, but much of that is probably only a difference of opinion as opposed to factually incorrect beliefs.

    B. The benefits of discretion, anonymity, and tact far outweigh the harm done by a few trolls who hide behind their keyboards.

    C. Just because it's difficult to grade from photos doesn't mean we can't learn from the exercise.

    D. Dealer bashing. Yeah, it probably isn't too tactful, and I'm sure it infuriates the honest dealers out there. However, you have to admit, there's a reason people do it. There are few people around the hobby who haven't been royally burned a time or two. There is also a distinction between a thread titled "What dealers don't want you to know" (which contains legitimate points of discussion) and outright bashing.

    E. If she's crying sour grapes for losing some sales from bad information found on the Internet, it's her job to educate the consumer and do a better job as a salesperson. As a physician I'm bombarded every day with nonsense people dig up while surfing the web. All but the truly hopeless respond very nicely to clear information provided in an appropriate way by a professional.

    F. I assume the TPGs will continue to run their forums as they see fit. She's always free to operate and bankroll her own.

Is it hypocritical if she asks for our names but refuses to give the names of all the known coin doctors she talks about all the time? If it is so harmless, what is she afraid of? Post them on the internet and stop spreading rumors that can't be substantiated because you won't name names. Post the names of all these coin doctors you know and I will post my name at the bottom of my post. Here is what she wrote with a few additions in caps by me:

"My solution is simple: make COIN DOCTORS be identified by their REAL names. This will cut down ANY attacks, misinformation, problem trades and dealer shenanigans. Further, with not having to be identified did you ever stop to think how you really have no clue who you are speaking too? Sadly, the need for making names public is too stop abuse. TIME FOR MAJOR CHANGES! It will make COIN COLLECTING a much SAFER place IF YOU JUST NAME THE COIN DOCTORS IN PUBLIC! "

I don't think that's hypocritical. I was around when she did name some coin doctors in the past. Apparently, there were issues with that approach.

If coin doctors were to be named, I think they may need to be named via a popular vendor rating website, like Yelp or something similar.

I have to disagree with Laura also. Places like this forum allow for the free flow of information as well as discussion and an opportunity for many to learn. While we do sometimes have some OT threads, they are necessary for us to keep the forum alive. Same with information that turns out to be false; without the forum this information might never be contested publicly. And it's not like misinformation didn't exist before internet forums.

Also, she really needs to learn to spell and use decent grammar. She should see all of the spell check suggestions as she is typing.

Yeah, as others have stated, I generally agree with Laura but not on this topic. When getting back in to collecting around 15 years ago, I was hammered by a number of dealers, paying tuition in Benjamins. It was here on these forums, that I got a less slanted view of the coin market and how it works. I credit the forums for educating me while limiting my tuition. Also as others have stated, the major auction houses are more than happy to have you
bid from two dimensional photographs, with no return privilege. Laura, have you given up on righting the ANA ship? Your efforts there are far more valuable to the Numismatic Community, than worrying about the forums. After all, don't we have a forum moderator? And we do lose forum members (a lot of them) when they cross the line. JMHO
