checking feedback, other listings and completed items is my protocol and i'm only human so my follow-through rate is probably only 90%. not to imply i detect all of the fakies out there. counterfeit detection from less-than-optimal images is a tough racket.
my average it seems is 1 folder for ebay seller counterfeits per day for over 2 years now.
i've been thinking about this image renaming problem and i'm going to investigate programs that can take large batches of files and do some auto-renaming. it will put a serious damper in my efficiency to prevent duplicates if/when i share with others and others to me but since they all get sorted eventually by denom etc, pulling dupes shouldn't be too bad.
edited to add:
i've looked at this one a few times along with some high-res authentic images and it seems like it is off to me. that 3 really just doesn't look right imo. not 100% either way though.
here are some 23-s unc cert numbers if anyone wants to run it down for funsies.
the dream of keeping fake coins off ebay will not come to fruition unless they can personally inspect each listing. It's disgusting to hear the ebay BS sales pitch as if it is some revolutionary new initiative that will actually work. Pitiful. The reality is that ebay needs to be honest that they can't police every listing and that buyers need to be wary on their own. It's talk like that which will lead to increased overconfidence in ebay listings and increased bidiots.
A guy showed up at my table at the show this weekend with a real 1895-S Morgan and an obvious Chinese counterfeit one. The date and surfaces were all wrong on the fake. I gave him my loupe, explained why the fake had an incorrect date font, and asked him to compare it to the real one. He could not tell the difference, despite my best attempts to describe it. I asked him if he bought it on eBay, and he answered yes. As long as there are people like this, there will be crude counterfeits selling for moon money.

meaning that we are going to accomplish an ultimate goal? i hope that isn't the implication since civilizations rise and fall, an ultimate goal of stopping these things is imo, unrealistic, therefore, what we are accomplishing on this grand ball of dirt of ours is to simply keep ourselves occupied as we wake up each day and the production/distribution will then in effect, end on their own one way or the other eventually.
or did you mean that as we identify these things and we wade forward to accomplish the goal of removing/eradicating them, each little step we take is progress towards reaching said goal(s). also by trusting before testing, we give the sellers the benefit of the doubt and after they have been notified, we get to see how they react or don't? so does this give the sellers of these items the inch or ourselves?
but it is almost like we are law enforcement and we get to the scenes after the damage is done just to mop up the mess and to actually make headway, the producers need be addressed in order to thwart the true threat. not all that different from "illegal" narcotics users or unsustainable business practices/production. what is behind the obvious is the desire and need to spread the pain they feel onto others while but really they are crying for help but are unable to find the words and attempt to send the message is via actions instead. reminds me of the metaphorical boat with a bunch of small holes and it keeps getting more holes as we struggle to find more plugs although we don't like to admit, we find ourselves asking, "will plugging the holes really solve the problem or will we finally admit we need to find a way to stop more holes from forming."
hmmm. all that from reporting some counterfeits. simplicity is the key but finding it amidst the chaos is a task much easier said then done...
of course finding an answer/solution is not automatically in-sync with the implementation of it/them.
who knows, maybe you meant something else entirely. "step by step, inch by inch"; will you digress? .

Sent him a note and he said he got some fakes in a recent purchase but does not know what to look for! how do you inflict someone with caring? that seems to be the biggest vacuum i've seen with people; well enough caring to act that is.
I HAVE SEVERAL OLD MORGAN SILVER DOLLARS THAT CAME OUT OF AN ESTATE. I AM NOT A COIN COLLECTOR AND CAN ONLY DESCRIBE THEM AS I SEE THEM. I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH HOW THE PROFESSIONALS SCALE THEM. I WILL DESCRIBE THEM THE BEST I CAN, PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU BID IF MY DESCRIPTION IS OFF. ALL SALES ARE FINAL, NO RETURNS. THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND LOOKING.
THIS IS A MORGAN SILVER DOLLAR DATED 1883S. ITS IN VERY GOOD CLEAR CONDITION. HER FACE IS CLEAR, ALONG WITH THE LETTERING AND NUMBERS.

I see these are gone.
The seller responded "how do you know"
I only messaged about 2 of them -- those I linked above -- the rest will have to come from others as I didn't even look at nor report the rest.
edit: I see from the last 2 interactions that I need to provide better information in the first contact messages than just letting them know they are counterfeits.
You can clearly see where the word copy was scratched off at the left wing. This is one of those tribute proof repops. I use firefox and installed a magnifier that auto magnifies when I rest my cursor over a pic on the screen. I contacted the seller and he stated that the coin is real LOL he said "your very wrong i've been collecting coins since 1972 this is the way i bought it from an old time collector in his 80's they didn't have fake coins back then" oh well. I reported it also.

if you acknowledge that you may be spending time splainin' things to someone that may already know and/or not even care.
i have had some decent successes though before numbnutzbay decided to privatize things across the site. good communications with some folk via email so at least the desire to do good isn't completely futile. .
A question to the rest of the regular Ebay counterfeit reporters: I no longer get the canned auto-reply emails from Ebay after I report a listing. Anybody else?
I also haven't received the "thank you" emails from Judith and Tiffany for a good week now.
The combination of the above makes me think that there may have been a change in policy. What do you think???

i have received them sporadically as of late but i've also gone to reporting them more via the individual item page. i was once told by ebay staff that is the fastest and most effective way to report. i don't know if it is true but i do try to save this link (http://ebay.com/ccw) for bulk reporting.
the ebay.com/ccw where they respond to the reports have had messages with them in the past and it took me a while to catch on. often times they would ask my advice about the listings, categories etc, so if you do get responses, don't just click them and go away so fast just to get the MESSAGE counter form your ebay home page to go away. bugs me when it should (1) MESSAGE >< so i often would just click the message so that would go away. a mistake in retrospect. .
