What is your holy grail AND....

Would you be willing to part with 95% of your collection in order to have it?

I am thinking about doing just that. Not only for the holy grail coin but because perhaps it is time to move on??

    1970-D PCGS MS67 Kennedy half dollar.
    (A TRUE Superb GEM.)

    I wouldn't give up the majority of my collection for it though...

    Also a TRUE MS68 clad Ike would be neat.

    i can think of half a dozen coins i would not only trade my entire inventory for but add all of my possessions too. i actually would like to do it to have the story to tell!

    the events and circumstances would be quite interesting to put together.

    There is NO WAY I'd trade most of my collection for it, though.

    What fun would that be? Everyday it would be the same coin.

    Now, if we're talking investment, okay. But from a hobby standpoint, I enjoy the variety, the hunt, and acquisition.

    That would depend on the coin being pursued and the 95% being considered to help fund it.

    I can see situations where that could be desirable.

    Yes, I've done it before and would do it again. One requirement would be that I'm allowed to continue grow the collection further: it would indeed be boring to be limited to having only one coin for the rest of my life.

    Oddly enough I think not a holy grail but an if I could only own 1 would be the willow tree shilling

    My whole life's worth could not achieve the holy grail. It's the next closest thing to nemesis, in my book. One too great vs one too small.

    I would indeed trade 95% of my collection for that one coin. I'm still waiting for it to come along.

    I have traded as much as 30 coins toward 1 nice piece or key piece several times in my collecting life and each time I have done it I have enhanced the overall look and feel of the collection.

    If I would be willing to do that, I would have done that. Since I haven't done that, I guess I would not.

    Maybe a NE Shilling, or a 1793 Strawberry Leaf Large Cent. Not willing to part with 95%......well maybe for the Large cent!

    About ten years ago I sold a 15 coin set of certified Morgans ( all high grade Mint State 7/8 TF variety set) to finance a condition rarity of another, single Morgan dollar variety. The single coin remains as 2nd finest certified at all TPG services for the variety, and is potentially worth many multiples of the set which was sold. image

    Today I served eviction papers on a cash drain that's been taking me down the last 4 years. Soon I'll
    have a bit more cash to squander on a really cool Coin. Id like a Full Strike 1921 Peace but doubt I want
    to part with upwards of $80 K .

    Maybe a nice Saddle Ridge $20 Liberty would be right on time. Those are going on sale soon - the timing
    couldn't be better.

    Its time to celebrate, baby. Yeah !

    Good choice !

    I'm thinking if I dump my Plats I could get into one of those. I no longer have much love for
    the Plats , they do look too much llike Silver.

    Now an Octagonal Pan Pac ? Yes that is one Holy Grail Coin.

    Being a good Georgia boy my holy grail is a Templeton Reid. I don't know if I would sell off 95% of my collection though to acquire it. But I guess I would have to sell off a good bit of it to come up with the funds.

    I would... Not today, but one day... Yes. I recently bought a coin I have wanted since falling in love with early dollars. Opportunity knocked, and I answered, then sold half my collection. It doesn't knock twice. Carpe deim! No regrets here. The Holy Grail... Hell ya! Fewer coins but I'm happier with my collection overall. Are we taking apples and oranges... Maybe. Best of luck!

    The gold aurei are quite rare sell in the $60-70K range. Denarii (silver) are less expensive ($5-20K):

    My holy grail coins are two Early Dated pieces from Schoonvorst-Sichem.
    Over the past 14+ years only a handful have come up for auction. I either
    did not bid strong enough or the pieces were with nearly un-readable dates.
    I would not sell 95% of my collection for them but I am better able to bid
    with my growing "war chest". For me the "hunt" is not as much fun as the
    ownership and opportunity to brag and show off my prizes.
