I always check out 1952 proof quarters. Does this look like a "superbird" to anyone else? Definately a top pop if it is.
Superbird?

Folks need to be careful about buying into Forum Hype regarding certain coins as I recall that there was a time when the "Superbird" proofs were quite popular. But mainly on coin forums.
I had one for awhile just to be able to see what all the hubbub was about and quite frankly, it just wasn't that interesting. Upon resale, I lost money and prices started to drop shortly there after.
Sure, the variety is in the CPG but the CPG is not the final authority on anything. The collectors are the final authority and collector interest in this particular variety has simply waned over the years. In short, the wave has left the beach and we can keep our sand.
Now here's the catch. Let's say, I paid a couple of grand for a PR67CAM back in the day and this PR68CAM would give me a nice registry boost.
I could buy the 68 and get the boost but I'd lose my butt on selling the 67.
I'd have to weigh the losses as to the importance of the coin since this one definitely falls into the, "Those that want them, already have them" category.
The name is LEE!
<< <i>It might be but as Lee says who cares any more, and IF PCGS graders will agree? >>
It's not a question of agree or disagree like grade or CAM designation. It either is or isn't.
My icon IS my coin. It is a gem 1949 FBL Franklin.
<< <i>It is most definately a superbird. The S stands out clear as day and some here need glasses...lol...That coin was purchased by a forum member, then put up for sale on Ebay for awhile as an unattributed top pop superbird....then the listing was ended and the coin was returned to the seller for a refund. >>
I need glasses.... where is it?
just above the A in america
However, another point to ponder has popped up in my head.
Does anyone really think that this coin warrants/deserves a CAM designation?
I sure do not (though to be honest, you need to see the coin in hand as photographs of proof coins are unreliable).
The fields on both sides of the coin do not look mirrored, watery, smooth, black and deep (which to my understanding is a major factor in a TPG bestowing a CAM designation). Further, the devices, while frosted, do not appear to have a strong enough level of frost to warrant a CAM designation.
Further, I do not know if the coin deserves a 68 grade since it appears that there are spots on the obverse of the coin (maybe they developed post encapsulation).
The pictured coin does not appeal to me and I would PASS (possible superbird, top pop and CAM designation notwithstanding), especially at the asking price. If someone does purchase the coin it would likely be for registry set points.
My 2 cents.
Although I'm pretty sure I can make out the "S" on the chest, I'm not 100% certain. It's surely not as easy to find as it is on many of them, from the photos alone.

it does appear as if that image is the best to see it or not. i looked at 3 reverse images and that one wasn't one of them. ><
for my part, it looks like it is from that image when i compare it next to the coinfacts image i linked in this thread. it sure looks like the outline.
