CSNS Show Report

Wednesday...Our daughter had several activities this week, so she and my wife stayed home. I left the house at daylight to drive to Schaumburg. I had planned on making several rest stops but felt good and kept pushing. At one of the interstate exits that I like to stop, I had planned to go in and have a nice lunch at Fazoli's. When I got there it was about 10:15 AM and they were not yet open. Instead of waiting for them to open I decided to keep going. After a couple of more hours and a rest stop I went to the McDonald's drive through for lunch.
Passing through farm country I saw numerous farmers preparing their fields for Spring planting.
Continuing on I reached Chicago just in time for the afternoon rush hour. image The first 15 on so miles went smoothly until I reached malfunction junction where traffic came to a near standstill. After a few miles traffic started to move again. I got off the interstate at the Schaumburg exit and drove several more miles to my hotel arriving around 5 PM. I checked in and then went out for a Chinese dinner.

Thursday... I ate the Continental breakfast at the hotel and then drove over to the convention center. I arrived about ten minutes before opening and quickly got my name tag. There were around 100 people waiting to go in at 10 AM. I went first to pick up a coin that I had purchased from a dealer web site. It was nicer than it looked in the photo. I was very pleased. I then went over to David Kahn's table and sold him 3 PCGS slabs. David is a great guy and very easy to work with. I looked at his 1796 Half Dime in PCGS 45. It is probably the nicest one that you will ever see in a 45 holder. I need the coin but just could not pull the trigger. I left his table and started at aisle 100 on my first tour of the bourse floor.
My want list now stood at 13, so I did not think that I would have much luck at this show. After about and hour I came to the HLRC table. I checked out a nice Draped Bust Half Dollar that I had been eying on their web site. It was just as nice as I expected. I passed on it for the present because it would blow my entire show budget and I wanted to look over the floor first. Moving on I saw nothing else that I needed.
One dealer had an original roll of 1909 VDB Lincolns that were in PCGS holders ranging from 64 BN to 66 RD. Another dealer had an entire case of around 125 1924-D Lincolns all in PCGS holders ranging from AG 3 ( 1 ) to XF 40. Why anyone would spend the money to slab that many lower value coins is totally beyond me.
I saw and old friend in the exhibit area and went over to chat for a short time. CSNS offers excellent awards for exhibitors. The exhibits were better that the ones at the FUN show and will rival the exhibits at the ANA.
I heard an older lady going around to each dealer asking if they had any Polish gold. I have been to several hundred shows over the past 45 years and had never heard that one before.
I had started on my second pass of the floor when I ran into Steve Ivy. We had a short chat. Each time that I passed the Penny Lady table she had several customers. This tour of the floor turned up nothing new. It was now late afternoon and I decided to call it a day. I stopped for dinner on the way back to the hotel.

Friday...I had the hotel continental breakfast again before going to the show. The plan today was to make one more pass of the floor before I went to the HLRC table to purchase the Draped Bust Half Dollar that I had looked at on Thursday. I again started at aisle 100. I had gotten only 1/4 of the way around the floor when I spotted a coin that I had not seen on Thursday. I examined it closely for several minutes. I asked the dealer if it had been in his case on Thursday. He said that it had. This is why I always make several passes of the floor. The price that he wanted was very fair. I purchased it and then went to show it to a dealer friend. He agreed that it was a very nice coin. I was happy but was now out of money to purchase the Draped Bust Half from HLRC. When I passed by David Kahn's table I noticed that the 1796 Half Dime was gone. He said that it was on hold. I walked around the floor for a few more minutes before deciding to call it a day.
I had wanted to get one of the special CSNS 75th Anniversary edition Red Books. I stopped at the CSNS booth on the way out of the show only to find that they were sold out.
I left the show and again had dinner on the way to the hotel.

Saturday... Today I had the continental breakfast before starting on the long journey home. Driving through Chicago on a Saturday morning sure beats weekday rush hour. I made several more rest stops on the way home than I had on the way to Chicago. This time I stopped at Fazoli's and had the baked spaghetti. I arrived home at 8 PM. Our daughter ran and gave me a hug that almost bowled me over.
I enjoyed the CSNS show. I bought some coins, sold some and enjoyed visiting with friends. Life is good.image

    Thanks for the report.

I'm so glad you got enough to eat during the show.

I'm always so relieved when our fellow posters tell us about what they ate and drank during their coin show visits, because I'm always so worried that my fellow numismatists will collapse due to dehydration and lack of food. image
